Testi di riferimentoWhat is global warming? from Slides Pag 104

The Greenest City: London from Slides pag 109 n. 17San Francisco bans plastic shopping bags, from Slides (WB) pag 103

GREENHOUSE EFFECT

• Greenhouse gases (vapour, water, carbon dioxide and methane) surround the Earth’s surface and part of the atmosphere = they trap heat naturally.

• Greenhouse gases let in light BUT they prevent heat from escaping…

Greenhouse gases

• They are like the glass walls of a greenhouse

It is called the 'Greenhouse Effect', because it works the same way as a greenhouse. The windows of a greenhouse play the same role as the gases in the atmosphere, keeping some of the heat inside the greenhouse.

Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate.

There are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming

Humans produce and emit greenhouse gases

• Burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) releases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

• Electricity production

• But the most warming is CARBON DIOXIDE

• Because there are more and more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, more heat is trapped which makes the Earth warmer. This is known as

GLOBAL WARMING.

problems

• Changing the climate faster (living things may have difficulties to adapt to the new climate)

• In the past this climate change was slower but NOW IT IS FASTER

The effects

Climate change• More extreme weather (storms, more rain or

drier period)

The effects

Ice melting

The effect

• Sea levels (Ice melting in the Antarctic and Greenland will flow into the sea)

The Greenest City: London from Slides pag 109 n. 17

• Interview between a journalist and the (former) Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone

Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson (since 2008)

His agenda

• Climate change is on top of his agenda because it will impact on every aspect of life

Plans to make London the greenest city

• To launch / create a Climate Change Agency

• Cut the carbon dioxide emissions• Firms should install renewable energy

products• Great use of solar panels and wind turbines

Individual Londoners should

change the way they live, such as

• Build their homes paying attention to the energy saving products

• Use greener energy• Save energy

San Francisco bans plastic shopping bags, from Slides (WB) pag 103

• The first city to ban plastic bags from shops, such as supermarket, chemist’s, …

BILL

• Obliges business owners to use biodegradable bags made up from corn and stop using plastic bags made from oil products

Drawbacks of plastic bags

• San Francisco produces about 180 million plastic bags each year

• Hard to recycle• Choke animals and birds• Blow into trees and waterway • Take up large amounts of space in landfills

Concerns and worries

• Supermarket may use paper bags requiring more trees to be cut down

• Biodegradable bags are more expensive

• Reusable Canvas bags are the greenest to use for the shopping
