we want to publish work and collaborate with other
creatives to showcase new and exciting things. we
want to start new collaborations in northampton
and beyond ~ starting small and getting larger.
we are a fluid concept. have an idea? want to join?
there is only one rule ~ that this isn’t a popularity
contest. work featured will be based on merit,
creativity and originality.

Jonathan Halls is a third year illustration student studying at the
University of Northampton. He focuses mainly on animals and
nature, heavily influenced by the environment ~ leading to most
projects being based around animals, conservation and their
stories. He predominantly uses charcoal, using the malleability of
the marks to create emotive and effective illustrations. He also uses
inks and digital tools, lending well to his powerful style and showing
strong contrast. Jon’s work shows clear parallels with Kathe
Kollwitz, Otto Dix and Illustrators such as Sue Coe and Raymond
Pettibon. Each conveying messages to the people helping influence
society, much like the work featured.
Robyn Ward is a 22 year old Northampton University Graduate.
“I create beautiful hand drawn illustrations
which are highly stylised and decorative.
In the past I have illustrated for Paper
& Cloth studio creating illustrations for
children’s clothing.
As well as TOAST london, a foodie website
where I have provided them with delicious
fruit and vegetable illustrations for their
banners.”
Gabrial Deacon is Northampton born
photographer now living in Manchester.
He effortlessly transitions between fashion
photography and the gritty analogue shots
of the manchester music scene. Here are just
a few of his recent works.
We decided that we should set a brief to help create this beginning
point for our contributors, something that will help them unleash
their creativity. ‘New beginnings’ seemed like an ideal phrase to
start off for our first issue and allowed a wealth of different ideas,
styles and influences to be used in order to complete the brief. We
specifically chose a phrase that had many connotations and ideas
surrounding it, yet retaining a positive message. We will put out a
new brief in the near future so email us at renegadeezine@gmail.
com with any inquiries and, if you are interested in contributing to
the next issue, we will be happy to divulge our next brief.
Ursurp, rise. don’t let the usurp part fool you there certainly not
the type of guys who will seize power forcefully but they sure as
hell are on the rise and their music will definitely make you want to
listen. You could say that they want to ‘usurp’ the stereotypes and
boundaries laid before them like a lot of popular music and just
‘rise’ above it.
With their New EP in the pipeline of release, Usurp, Rise are all geared up for
the November tour and are hoping to get their music heard and enjoyed across
the country.
With the majority of the band based in the buzzing music scene of Brighton they
have met some other new exciting talent along the way in particular the likes of
Patchwork Natives and Lapis Lazuli
The 4 piece instrumental ensemble work with a range of genres such as Jazz,
Funk, Prog and Trip Hop and you can hear how it reflects in there new release.
The lads have been together for 3 years and in that time have developed as
musicians and as a band, which has made there jams together refreshing, fun
and inventive to put together one big mix of creative ideas. with each member
bringing there own unique styles in to play to make this musical fusion possible.
It is hard to describe what influenced their unique sound. They would say that it is
more of a culmination of how they have developed since being together but bands
such as badbadnotgood and snarky puppy have influenced them some what
recently which you will probably pick up on when you hear it.

Who made you want to get into
music?
Michael Jackson, D’Angelo, Prince and Oasis.
Oasis made me wanted to be in a rock band,
my brother was listening to live forever and i
was like what is this, this is blowing my mind!
What is your favourite album
of all time?
Voodo - D’Angelo, Lionel Ritchie - Back to
Front and Stevie wonder - inner visions
What was the first album you
bought?
Michael Jackson - Dangerous it was £15.99!
What was the first song you
wrote and what was it about?
It was called “why don’t you love me too” and
it was about my first love, my unrequited
love she didn’t really love me back. It was the
worse song I’ve ever written but i probably
had to get it out the way! (laughs) it was bad,
really bad!
on the spot!
What is your favourite song to
play with avi about all other avi
songs?
Oh wow. No at the moment ‘Breaking for love’
which is a new track.
Has it been recorded yet?
No not yet but we are hoping to in September
at LIPA university where we have recorded
before.
When are you planning on a new
release?
After the tour is over, we are hoping to tour
again in march/ april time and we are hoping
to either have a EP ready for then or we might
release a album. Its really difficult cause you
get all different advice from people in the
industry and because we are doing this all our
selves you’re torn between do we record a EP
and send it to the label and see if it interests
them or do we record a album and sell it and
hope for the best!
Next gig in Northampton?
We are looking into doing a ticket gig just
before christmas.
Best gig on the summer tour so
far?
Newcastle was epic! The crowed were
awesome and it was really weird because we’d
never played ‘the tyne bar’ before and we got
payed 200 quid which is great for playing out
of town cause it covers our costs! everyone
there had checked us out and had enquired
about what we where like and this venue knew
what we where about. yeah a really good
reception!
Best cousin avi memory?
Errrm i dunno (pauses) anything duncan says.
(laughs) No Argentina, Argentina was pretty
epic. just doing a gig and having both sets of
grandparents in the room was awesome, that
was the only time they got to see me perform.
