A 1985 Instrument Mashup

Know Your Constituents!

• Where do they live online?

• Where do you live online?

(Did you just answer the same thing twice?)

CASESMC10: Primary Networks

• Facebook– Canada, Egypt, France, Jamaica, Lebanon, UAE,

USA

• Hyves– The Netherlands

• Hi5– Mexico

Commonalities

• We may use different social networks, but…– They all bring people together

– They are generally designed for for-profit uses, but educational uses emerge and can be very powerful

Open Your Mind

• You probably do not want to just copy

• Applying a new mindset to social media will benefit you and your constituents

Where, and Why?

Learn, Shape, Innovate

• 1. Use the tools first – play!

• 2. Adapt the tools to fit your school

• 3. What will you build for your constituents?

Your First Step:

• Always take the time to learn the privacy/sharing settings of the tool!

– Read examples of the most current recommendations/tips.

• Most sites are built to make it easy to over-share – it benefits them!

Your Value

• You are only as relevant on other sites as your constituents perceive you to be

– Online, they don’t owe you anything!

Track It!

What is Your End Goal?

• What is the current path to get there, and why are you using those tools to do so?

• Is there a better way, and does it make sense to pursue?

Your Responsibilities

• As educational institutions, what distinct information should we be offering?

• Be honest: how do you expect to interact with other companies online?

Your Expectations

• You have expectations when using Google, Amazon, or Netflix

The “Arguments”

• It’s free!

• We should do it because it’s there!

• We don’t need to track it!

Time Allocation

• Consider your current strategy

• Consider your team and their skill set

• In which places could you experiment?

What is New?

01 APR 2010 Facebook allows non-official

entities to “generate support for [their] favorite cause or topic…” with the caveat that they may eventually be “adopted and maintained by the Facebook community”

Community Pages

• What will this mean for…

– Education• Control

– School “Subgroups”• Branding

Due Diligence

• It is our job to provide information to our constituents, and to do it in ways that reach them (while addressing our mission!)

Thanks, & Stay Connected
