The East African Community (EAC)

The East African Community – EAC (the

Community), is the regional inter-

governmental organization of the

Republics of: Burundi; Kenya; Rwanda;

Uganda; Tanzania and South Sudan.

2

Objective of the Community is to develop

policies and programs aimed at widening

and deepening co-operation among the

Partner States in political, economic,

social and cultural fields; research and

technology; defence; as well as security,

legal and judicial affairs – for their mutual

benefit.

The East African Community Initiatives

3

• Developing a Bioeconomy Strategy for Eastern Africa

(BiSEA) and Policy Agenda.

• Development of EAC region Space Strategy

complementing the African Space Strategy

• EAC Biomass Based Bioeconomy Assessment

• Establishment of the East Africa Regional Bioeconomy

Observatory

• Capacity building of National Forestry Authorities on use

of EO-based data in REDD+ mapping

EASTECO REDD+ AND FOREST MONITORING

Working with National Forestry Authorities in:

• Biomass assessment at national and regional level

• Capacity building in REDD+ using EO-based and field

measurement data.

• Carbon Stocks and Emissions loss from deforestation

and degradation

REDD+ AND FOREST MONITORING

REDD+ in EAC Countries are guided by UNFCCC Focal

points in respective ministries.

There is REDD+ National Steering committee at National

Forestry Authorities.

The REDD+ National Steering Committee are also

responsible for MRV component too.

The Global Forest Change (GFC) product provides estimates of global tree cover and tree coverchanges on an annual basis from 2000 through 2014 based on Landsat satellite imagery(Hansen et al. 2013). It shows significant differences to the national data in terms of treecover/forest cover, but similar trends in terms of tree cover loss/forest cover loss.

Forest inventories in Uganda:

1) National Biomass Study (NBS),

2) Stock assessment inventories (Exploratory Inventory and

Integrated Stock Survey),

3) Permanent Sample Plot (PSP) for growth and yield

monitoring, and

4) Special purpose inventories (e.g., biodiversity, carbon

assessment and research studies).

CHALLENGES

Capacity building using EO-based in REDD+

• Biomass assessment at national and regional level

• Carbon Stocks and Emissions loss from deforestation

and degradation

Access to Sentinel data in Africa still limited despite

GMES &Africa.
