Challenge: Getting Event Data Streams Under Control
• 90% of the time, the customer did not have a single unified
construct for what they wanted to do with monitoring
• Though SmartCloud Monitoring (ITM) was in the picture,
different agents are collecting different types of data
• 90-95% of the time, the customer was not leveraging the full
capabilities of the Tivoli toolset
4
Let’s Get to Work: Know your Tivoli Presence
5
Let’s Get to Work: The ITCAM “Perspectives”
We understand that although they generate similar ITM
event data (Situation Events), they collect different data for
analysis by an SME:
6
Let’s Get to Work: I’m telling “MOM” (OMNIbus)
The OMNIbus ‘ObjectServer’:
• Though we understand that all organizations do not have
Netcool OMNIbus, we recommend the implementation of
a MOM based tool
7
Let’s get to work: I’m telling “MOM” (OMNIbus)
• The Tivoli EIF Probe is our primary vehicle for getting
events from ITM into Netcool OMNIbus for event
management
• The Tivoli Probe rules file component of the probe is used
to manipulate the data being sent to it by ITM
8
Let’s apply some logical thought: Recommendations
• Recommendation/Consideration #1 – ITM Situation
Standardization:
Your Situation construction should be focused on a specific monitoring
area or platform over and above what comes with the Out-Of-The-Box
situations that come with the ITM product
9
Let’s apply some logical thought: Recommendations
• Recommendation/Consideration #2 – Situation Actions
In the interim of having a MOM based tool, consider utilizing the Situation
action component when building situations, and model all of your situations
to utilize it (i.e. email)
10
Let’s apply some logical thought: Recommendations
• Recommendation/Consideration #3 – Event Management
Using the Rules file from Tivoli/EIF (and most OMNIbus probes, the events
can be modified to have a prefix, suffix that promotes a common format
once they enter into the OMNibus ObjectServer)
11
Regroup and Key Takeaways
• Inspire thought about event consolidation
• Inspire thought about long term strategy
• Recommendation/Consideration #1 – ITM Situation
Standardization
• Recommendation/Consideration #2 – Situation Actions
• Recommendation/Consideration #3 – Event Management
• Beowulf Quote: “Give that man a piece of silver, he has a story
to tell” – You can now communicate to all levels of management
what the monitoring environment provides, each step in the
process, and how it can be improved upon as organizational
needs change
12
What’s Next? – More We Can Do!
Once you have configured your monitoring to some
acceptable design and best practice considerations, you’ve
now created a foundation with which to improve upon what
you’ve already put together:
• APM/UI – Can manipulate response time data
• Netcool Impact – Event Automation/Policies to automate
action in response to events
• Tivoli Business Service Manager – Dashboarding
(OMNIbus, Data Fetchers)
• DASH – More Dashboarding and integration amongst the
toolsets and the data they generate
