Recognize Linear Relationships and Solve Equations with Technology

Using Geometer’s Sketchpad to Chart and Graph Patterns

iLearn Grade 7

Math Session 4 of 8

Focusing Questions

How can Geometer’s Sketchpad support working with patterns?

Instruction

Framing The Session

Connect multiple algebraic representations: equation, geometric pattern, graph, table using Geometer’s SketchPad.

Teaching

Open to page 415, Develop & Understand B, in the Revised IMPACT.

Together we will follow the steps in the handout “Steps to Create a Graph and Table in GSP” to complete the problem set.

To the steps

Guided Practice

Use your graph to answer questions 3-8, p. 415 (directly in Geometer’s Sketchpad using the text tool).

Getting Started

Let’s practice making tables and graphs in Geometer’s Sketchpad.

Work Time

Create a graph and/or table for the pattern in Think & Discuss, page 414.

Share

Let’s look at some of the sketches you created.

Steps to create a graph and table of the pattern:

1. Edit menu: preferences: other: tenth (On Mac: adjust Scalar to tenths)

2. Text tool : double click in area: answer questions here; Start by answering #1 3. Graph menu: snap points, then plot points (enter table values given) (#2)

4. Line tool : draw line through points, Display menu: line width: dashed (#2)

5. Point tool : place point on line Select it : Measure menu: coordinates Drag point until x = 8, what is the y value? (Use the unit point to rescale graph)

(#4) Use the text tool to record your answer.

6. To create a table:

Select the ‘movable’ point: Measure menu: abscissa (x), and ordinate (y)

Select the 2 measurements: graph menu: tabulate

Double click on table: slide to next plotted point

Repeat step 3 until complete

Use your graph to answer questions 3-8, p. 415 (directly in GSP using text tool).
