Rule 1•If there is one vowel between two or more consonants, try the short vowel sound.

Cap•The word cap has only one vowel ‘a’

•Hence it makes its short sound

Rule 2•If there is are two vowelsvowels between two or more

consonants, the first one

will be long and the second will be short or be quiet.

Cape•The word cape has two vowels

•So, the first vowel ‘A’ makes

the long sound

•and the second one ‘E’ stays silent.
