Alittlebackground—Ourfeaturedadopterisaretiredschoolteacher.About6-7yearsagosheappliedtoadopt,andtookspecialneedsdogGracie.Eachyearshesenta“reportcard”talkingabouthowGraciewasdoing,adventurestheyhad,waysGraciehadchangedandwaysGraciehadchangedher.Graciewasanolderdog,zerosocializationandhadtobean“only”.Gracie’s“mom”didafabulousjobwithher.LatelastyearsheletusknowthatGracie’shealthwasbeginningtofail.Shekeptusposted,andinFebruary,Graciediedinhermom’sarms.

Gracie’smomalsoletusknowthatshewantedtoadoptagain,andsoon.Andasitturnsoutwe

hadtwosweetgirlscomeintorescuejustbeforeChristmas.Maria,along-timevolunteerandfostermom,broughtthegirlstoherownhomeandfostereduntilearlyMarch.Theywereinbadshape;bothwereupset,onewasvery

overweight;onewasunderweightandhaddiarrheaallthetimeandwouldn’teatmuch.MariagottheirdietssquaredawayandthenGracie’smomofferedtofoster.Sheintendedtoadopt,and,truetoherstateddesire,shedid.Thegirlshavenewnames,AbbyandVicki.Botharenowatnormalweight(oneincreasedandonedecreased)anddoingwell.Andtheyarelearninglotsintheirnewhome.They’vebecomeaccustomedtowearingharnessesandleashwalking,ridinginthecarfortripstothedogparkandMudBay.

Thegirlshavebeenlearningtoringabellhungonthebackdoortoencourageproperpottyhabits.Abbyusuallygetstothebellfirst,sowhenVickigetstheresheputsherpawsonAbby'sbackinherattempttoreachit.Unfortunately

ringingAbbydoesn'tcountforatreatandVickihastomaneuverpastherbuddytoearnthe

prize.Thentheybothgooutsideanddutiesaredoneproperly,oratleastonehopestheyallare!

Transporters:Volunteerswhocanhelptransportdogsfromeitherreleasinghometofosterhomeorfromfosterhometoadoptivehome.Eitherpartorallofthejourney.ThemostcommonroutesseemtobeupanddowntheI-5corridorbetweenPortlandandSeattle.Fosters:Volunteerswhoopenuptheirhomestoadogthatiscomingintorescue.Thefosterdogwillstayinthefosterhomeuntiladoptedintotheirforeverhome.Thefoster'sroleistofollowrescue'sguidelinesforveterinarycare,gettoknowthepersonalityofthedogsowecanmakeagoodplacement,andsometimeshelpwithproblembehaviors(shyness,pottytraining,anxiety,etc).HomeVisits:Visitanapplicant’shometoassessifit'sasafeandlovingenvironmentforafosteroradopteddog,fillingouttheformthatisprovidedbyrescue.Weespeciallyneedhomeinspectorsthatareinthenon-metropolitancities.Wearealsointroducinganewvolunteeropportunityforthatisbeingutilizedbysomeofourdogrescuepeergroups:Sponsorships.Howtosponsorafoster?ASponsorshipDonationof$20,$50orwhateveryouareabletoprovide,willidentifyyourspecialrelationshipwithyourselectedIG.Yoursponsorshipwillbecelebratedonthe“availabledogs”pagesofourwebsite.ExperiencethatsharedjoywhenyoursponsoredIGchoosesafamilytoadopt.ThetypicalcostofpreparinganIGforadoptionfarexceedsthe$275-450adoptionfee.Yourgeneroussponsorshipcanhelpfillthatgap.
