Baltic Blue Growth:
Initiation of full scale mussel farming
in the Baltic Sea
interreg-baltic.eu/projects
Baltic Blue Growth
One of the most serious challenges the Baltic Sea is facing is eutrophication, the enrichment of ecosystems by chemical nutrients. The objective of the project is to remove nutrients from the Baltic Sea region by farming and harvesting blue mussels. This may be a stand-alone measure to counteract eutrophication, but can also become a business model for the feed industry and be used in symbiosis with fi sh farms.

100 – 200 incidents are reported involving commercial traffi c, but the number of near miss situations is many times higher. This, combined with the increasing amount of traffi c in the Baltic Sea, the traffi c intersecting at several nodes, diffi cult waters, and the harsh winter conditions in the northern Baltic Sea, increases both the probability of a large-scale maritime incident and the diffi culty of conducting search and rescue operations.
