It’s not easy to approach complex situations without the use of a well-considered process. My design process always starts with research. Having a thorough understanding of a situation can help the next steps become more clear. Once we understand, we begin to figure out what the problem is. Next, I analyze my research findings to look for patterns, then, through prototyping, begin to develop ideas. Next I share and test my ideas, and can begin to implement them.

This process allows complex situations to turn into clearly planned solutions with actionable steps.

Good Earth Natural Food Store: 2010

By conducting an organizational audit (researching all aspects of Good Earth and their products and competition), I was able to develop a strategy that would help Good Earth raise awareness within the community.

I suggested that the small, local store grow a garden with interactive classes for children, teaching techniques that would help them understand where food comes from and the benefits of natural foods.

The Mental Help Website Proposal: 2011 - 2012

The Mental Help was started in fall 2011 as a collaborative transformation design project. We used affinity mapping and the simplex process to determine that mental health help is hard to find in Indianapolis. We prototyped a website and grassroots marketing campaign that would make finding help easier.

I continued this project independently in spring 2012 to seek community support and implementation.

Yonsei-INDEX: Design to Improve Life Summer School: 2011, South Korea

Worked with a cross-cultural interdisci-plinary team to develop a system design, Seoul Farmers, that would give elderly people living alone in Seoul, Korea a purposeful job in which they give back to the community.

Seoul Farmers, is an urban farming and microloan system design, allowing Seoul to become more sustainable while reducing elderly suicide rates.

Yonsei-INDEX: Design to Improve Life Summer School: 2011, South KoreaUrban Art Elective

Worked on a team to determine a need on Yonsei University’s new International campus. We decided that it was important that we develop an urban art design that would help create a sense of community and encourage students to come outside and socialize.

We designed, proposed, and implemented an installation that used ropes to create shade and interest in a courtyard on campus.
