How can someone from a different culture benefit from communication through greeting them?

Greet them with their preferred method, therefore preventing the possibility of offending them.

Walk past them without acknowledging them.

Greet them in your preferred way.

Speak in their language., as this will avoid any confusion or miscommunication.

Adapting Your Communication

If someone is having difficulty understanding your tone of voice, which of the following ways is ideal to ensure you are understood better?

Maintain the same tone of voice.

Soften your tone to ensure your word production is clear and coherent. Shout as loud as

you can so that you are heard.

Consistently change your tone to find the suited one to the receiver.

Accuracy in Communication

If you are required to provide information when speaking to others, how can you ensure that the information you are providing is accurate?Make information

up as you go along.

Assume that the information you are providing is correct based on what you have heard from others.

Research your findings prior to providing information to others.

Look only for secondary data.

Include bright colours, facts, statistics, relevant information and transitions in your presentation.

Dull colours are the key to maintaining a high level of professionalism in your presentation, so avoid any sort of bright colours or transitional effects.

When answering a question, how should you go about ensuring that you answer it correctly?

Give your own opinions and ideas and maintain a bias view on your thoughts.

Do not answer any questions that you feel should not be answered.

If you feel it is necessary, lie to give your receiver a good response to their question.

Give an enthusiastic response to the receiver whilst ensuring to balance any biases equally.

What is the simplistic term for a ‘verbal exchange’, and which of the following is the best way to conduct one?

A verbal exchange is simply a conversation. The best way to conduct one is by being kind, polite and respectful whilst having the exchange.

A verbal exchange is a federal offence.

A verbal exchange is simply a place for your views to be discussed.

What does signing consist of?

Talking to anyone who is around you.

Signing is a method of communicating with deaf people. As opposed to conveying sound, coordinated hand movements are used.

Using sign posts to have a discussion.

Lip Reading

How is it possible for someone who is deaf to still understand what you are saying?

There is no method for this.

Writing words down on a piece of paper is a way to use lip reading as a method of lip reading.

Lip reading is a way to visually interpret movements of the lips, face and tongue. This is therefore a way for deaf people to understand what the sender is saying.

By using negative language, other people will understand you through the means of poor communication.

It is best to avoid using negative language so that you do not offend others.

Negative language is a way to have others perceive your language as positive.

Active Engagement

NoddingHow can the sender benefit from the receiver nodding when communicating? Through nodding,

the sender is able to identify when the receiver is acknowledging what they are saying.

Nodding implies you are not acknowledging the sender at all, and that you are ignoring them.

Nodding is a way to clarify your own points.

Nodding is another means of vocal communication.

SummarisingHow can responding to a summarization show that you are listening to the sender?When responding to

a summarization, it shows you have acknowledged what they are saying and understand what they have summarized to you.

I don’t know what summarizing is.

Summarizing is an effective form of communication that is widely used by many people.

If the sender gives a summary to the receiver, then that person is required to respond.

Paraphrasing

If you paraphrase something a sender says, what will that instigate to them?

That you are clarifying what they are saying. By putting it in other words, it shows you understand what they are saying and that you are listening.

Paraphrasing is a way of confusing someone when conversing.

Barriersin Communication

Background Noise

How could background noise hinder your chances of having an effective conversation with someone else?

Background noise only helps to create an effective conversationBackground noise will prevent you from fully hearing what the sender is saying, thus causing a barrier in communication.

When responding to a summarization, it shows you have acknowledged what they are saying and understand what they have summarized to you.

Distractions

What factors can act as distractions whilst conversing with someone else?

• Background Noise

• Construction sites

• People having other conversations

• Loud bangs

Lack of Concentration

How can you maintain concentration whilst studying or completing a task?

Put noise cancelling headphones in and focus on the task at hand by assessing goals and targets to complete.

Just try your best to focus.

Ask a friend to talk to you. This way you will focus more.

Try to switch between tasks, therefore your focus will always be based on work.

Types of Questions

Which type of question is an open question?A question that only enables you to provide one word answers without the ability to adapt on the question.

A question that enables you to expand on your answer and provide a description to compliment the answer.
