Presenting your way to the top!

Susie Hall - The Impact Coach

This is NOT rocket science!

Why are you there?

• To inform/teach ?• To persuade/influence?• To encourage?• To entertain?• To inspire/motivate?

• A combination of these?

What is your Intention?

• What do you want your audience to go out of the door:

• Thinking? (No more than 3 ideas)• Feeling? • Doing

= Your intention

Your point of maximum impact

• Interesting, surprising, shocking fact or statistic

• Threat• Challenge• Your conclusion• Striking visual• Question / Rhetorical question• “Quote”, anecdote, plant an image –

“imagine”

What will they remember?• Could be anything!!

• Probably very little

• Anecdotes before facts• PERSONAL information • Can you remember something

that doesn’t interest you?• What should they remember

about you?

The power of the “Right Brain”

Make “whole brain presentations” OR

captivating hearts and minds

Logic + emotion

Right brain techniques

• Anecdotes• Analogies/similes/metaphors (It’s a

bit like...)• Examples• Stories*/case studies • Video/music/sound clips/VISUAL aids• Demonstrations (Steve Jobs)• Audience involvement • Humour (Careful !)

Word keys to the Right Brain

• “Imagine” or “I want you to imagine......”

• “Picture this.....”• “What if.....”• “Let’s suppose.....”• “That reminds me of....”• “It’s a bit like......” (great way to

use humour)• “In other words.....”

The Vocabulary of Impact

AvoidWeak and unimpressive

language:• Try• May• Maybe• Perhaps• Might• Hope / hopefully

Go from Big to Massive:Harness the power of your words

• Might = Will• Good = Fantastic /

Excellent• Great = Fantastic• A.S.A.P. = Immediately• Important = Crucial• Big = Massive• Perhaps we = We must• Interesting = Compelling

And equally powerful in the negative

• Poor = Pitiful• Unacceptable =Outrageous

LudicrousRidiculous

• Challenge = ThreatRisk

Using the power of Adverbs

• AbsolutelyWe are absolutely confident in....• Totally I am totally in agreement

with....• Utterly We are utterly convinced

that....• Specifically We are specifically

interested in....• Completely We are completely on side

with....• Wholeheartedly We are wholeheartedly in

agreement....• Substantially We are substantially over

budget....• Keenly I am keenly interested in....• Hugely We are hugely better off as a

result....• Dramatically We are dramatically

reducing....

The Rule of “Three”

• “Government of the people, by the people, for the people”

Abraham Lincoln

How can you deliver your presentations

for maximum impact?

Pace – busting the myth

The Did-You-Get-That Pause

Gives your message real punch

• Probably the most powerful weapon you have as a communicator

• Gives what you’re saying real power

• Allows the audience time to “get” your key point and to engage with your content

• Combine it with eye contact for huge impact

The Thinking Pause

measured and in control • Helps you think about what

you’re going to say next

What is charisma?

“personal quality or gift that enables an individual to

impress and influence many of his or her fellows”

“a spiritual power given by God”

What are the components of charisma?• Projected vs embodied• Vitality• A body thing• Connection to a higher vision• Self esteem• Being present• EQ• Uniqueness (ties in with your

“Brand”)

How can you increase your level of charisma when presenting?

present• Manage your thoughts for

positive healthy self-esteem (where are you basing your confidence?)
