NATURAL RESOURCES

Materials or substances occurring in nature which can be exploited for economic gain and can be used by people.

TYPES OF RESOURCES

There are two types of resources Renewable Resource Non-renewable Resource

Renewable Resource

The renewable resources are unlimited in nature, and they are not likely to be exhausted by human activities.

Types of renewable resource Solar Wind Geothermal Biomass Hydro Ocean

WIND ENERGY

Energy can be extracted from the wind by transferring the momentum of passing air to rotor blades.

SOLAR ENERGY The sun has produced energy for billions of years.

Solar energy is the sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reach the earth.

Solar energy is free, and its supplies are unlimited. Using solar energy produces no air or water pollution but does have some indirect impacts on the environment.

For example, manufacturing the photovoltaic cells used to convert sunlight into electricity, consumes silicon and produces some waste products.

Large solar thermal farms can also harm desert ecosystems if not properly managed.

BIOMASS

Biomass is organic material made from plants and animals.

Biomass can be converted to other usable forms of energy like methane gas or transportation fuels like ethanol and biodiesel.

Non-renewable Resource

The non-renewable natural resources are limited in nature and are liable to be degraded in quantity and quality by human activities.

Types of non-renewable resources Oil (petroleum) Natural gas Coal Uranium

FOSSIL FUEL

Oil was formed from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago in a marine (water) environment before the dinosaurs.

SHORTAGE OF OIL AND FOOD Shell chief fears oil shortage in seven

years Rising food prices and spreading

hunger, the social order is beginning to break down in some countries
