The has been no significant investment in commuter rail transport in Nairobi for many years,

No rapid mass transit system exists, Except for the new road bypasses the road

network has not expanded, The population has grown exponentially, Vehicle numbers have increased significantly, AS A RESULT THE CITY IS FACED WITH

SERIOUS TRAFFIC CONGESTION.

KR has a significant rail network around the city of Nairobi that can play a significant role in providing fast, efficient and reliable commuter services around the city

This network is under utilized and with expansion and modernization the system can provide a major alternative to commuter transport in Nairobi

KR has therefore developed concrete plans to modernize and expand the commuter rail services in Nairobi to provide a High quality High capacity Fast Reliable SafeCommuter Rail Service

KR has a project development plan to guide the way forward with regard to implementation of the expansion and modernization of the commuter rail transport services for Nairobi.

This commenced in April 2009 and the plans are complete.

The next step is to move to implementation.

The project will be implemented in three phases:

Phase 1 (the core system) considered financially viable will cover the following routes:o Nairobi – JKIAo Nairobi – Embakasi Villageo Nairobi – Ruiru, ando Nairobi – Kikuyu

Phase 2 will extend rail commuter services to Thika, Limuru and Lukenya/Kitengela

PLANS FOR RAIL COMMUTER SERVICES GREATER NAIROBI

New Stations will be developed at: Embakasi Village Pipeline Donholm Githurai, Mwiki Buru Buru, Imara Daima, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kibera and Lenana.

Justification: Provide alternative faster means of

passenger transport to the Airport Presently it takes 90 minutes on

average to travel from CBD to Airport Stakeholders including KQ, KAA and

KCAA support KR initiative

KR through MoT requested GoK for funding Implementation will begin in June 2010 to be

complete by December 2010

To proceed to implementation a number of issues need to be progressed by NCC: Discourage informal settlements within the

railway reserve; Control of waste disposal within the railway

reserve The Matatu park at Nairobi Railway station

needs to be reorganised for easy flow of traffic;

Expeditious development approvals of plans;
