Environmental Protect

a) Pollution control measureb) Recycling c) Environmental education and

legislation d) Conservation of organism and

their hobbies

Pollution control measure

a) Checking compliance with Construction Noise Permit conditions.

b) A complaint on dark smoke emissions from a chimney.

c) Pollution complaints are entered into a computer network for swift action.

Recycling

What it is

Recycling is a process in which therecyclable waste (such as aluminum

cans, glass, paper and plastic) is sorted andcollected, and reprocessed into new

anduseful products

Why we need do that

Conservation of normal resources

a) Recycling 1 ton of paper can save 17 big trees.

b) Reduction of pollution c) Recycling can reduce methane and

other greenhouse gases production from decomposition of rubbish in landfills.

Energy conservation

a) Recycling aluminum cans save up to 95% of the energy required for making new cans.

b) Recycling 20 aluminum cans use the same amount of energy when making a new can.

c) Extension of Hong Kong's limited landfill life d) Recycling can reduce the amount of waste

deposited in landfills. e) Recycling 95 tones of aluminum cans save

space in the landfill equal to a standard-sizes swimming pool.

Create employment

a) The processes of recycling such as collecting, transporting and manufacturing provide employment.

What can we do about waste

Reduce

a) Avoid buying over packaged products and those made of mom-reusable and non-recyclable materials.

b) Use cloth towels and handkerchiefs. c) Use both sides of every sheet of

paper.

a) Reuse envelopes. b) Take old plastic bags or

cloth ones when shopping.c) Reuse glass and plastic

bottles. It is difficult to recycle them in Hong Kong.

d) Donate old clothes, Furniture and toys.Call Friends of the Earth for collection points.

e) Buy Second-hand Furniture, House-wares, books and electrical appliances.

Reuse

Replace

a) Use reusable, recyclable and repairable products instead of non-environmentally friendly products.

b) Buy recycled products

Recycle

a) At present, the only wastes collected in Hong Kong for recycling are aluminum cans, some paper and domestic plastics, industrial plastics, waste wood, scrap metal, and clear glass.

What can we do about Aluminum

Identify the aluminum can by using a magnet :aluminum does not stick to magnet !Separate the aluminum can from the rest ofrubbish. Bag them up and deliver to canrecycling bin or nearby can recycler. CallFriends of the Earth for the collection points.or out them beside rubbish bins, will take themaway for recycling.

What can we do about paper

Sort the paper waste from the rest of rubbishand deliver them to paper recycling bin ornearby paper recycler. Those paper with plastic coating, tissue paper are non-recyclable. Or join Friends of the Earth paperrecycling scheme, whichhas been running at schools, offices and otherorganizations since March 1990.

What can we do about plastics

Since plastics are essentially be derived from petroleum that haslimited reserve, disposalof plastics by way landfillor incineration is a waste of useful resources.Such wastage may reduce by recycling, in oneform or another.

What can we do about chemicals

Another way to recycling plastic,Waste without the need for costlyseparation is to use it as a rawmaterial for catalytic cracking. Theprocess is known as pyrolysis. The products of pyrolysis are separated byfractional distillation and can be used to

makeplastics and other chemicals.

Recycling of energy

Incineration of plastics toproduce energy is, in a sense,a recycling of energy contentsorted in the materials. The energy values containedin plastics are quite high. Theenergy so obtained can be usedfor heating or generation ofelectricity.

Environmental education and legislation

To most city-dwellers, “Consumption” is a very usual practice in everyday life; Consumption occurs in every aspect of out life, However, there is an unceasing depletion if the limited resources on earth behind consumption. Even worse is that over-consumption leads to waste of resources a lot of waste. As a result, our ecological environment is damaged and polluted.

the target readers of “Little Saviors if the Earth“ are primary school students. Since children of this age group start to have their own consumption behavior which reflects their values. For this reason, as adults, we should teach them correct concepts values, and tell them to bear environmental protection in mind when consuming and not to over-use resources for the sake of consumption. We should provide the children with more than one choice for their reference. Through the “Little Saviors of the Earth”. We try to convey the message of green appropriately use or not. Or whether there are eco-friendly alternatives.

Conservation of organism and their hobbies

a) We (H.K Dolphinwatch Ltd. )hope you can join us on one of ourtours to see these beautifulcreatures. If not, you're welcometo browse around our site to learnabout them and help save them.
