What is the present Progressive?

A verb construction (made up of a present form of the verb "to be” plus a present participle) that conveys a sense of ongoing action at the present time.

She is waiting for you

She is waiting for you, since yesterday.

She is going to wait for you, until tomorrow.

Actions taking place at the moment of speaking (now).

Actions taking place only for a limited period of time.

Jane is helping in his brother's firm this week.

Repeated actions

Actions taking place around now (but not at the moment of speaking)

She is always helping people.

I am studying for my exams.

To refer to gradual processes of change

Planned actions: future reference

This plant is growing very fast....We need another pot

I'm going to the theatre tonight

Temporary situations

To describe current trends.

She is staying with her friend for a week

People are becoming less tolerant of smoking these days

To talk about something happening around the time of speaking, but not necessarily at the time of speaking.

Now she is having a bath… But she is  an important writer. She is writing a book on global warming.

There are 3 forms to use the present progressive: Affirmative

Negative

Question (WH- Yes/No)
