INTRODUCTION The Mat switch is a perfect low cost solution for monitoring large areas of

floor space

The Mat Switch is often used for security applications, but it is also used in projects such as interactive arts, animal behavior tracking, and more. The mat can be placed underneath carpeting.

The circuit uses different components such as IC555 timer, resistors, capacitors, 9v battery along with piezo buzzer which produces a beep sound when a person crosses over it

Its working is very simple and easy to construct.

Description of ComponentsO The circuit uses different components such as IC555 timer,

resistors, capacitors, 9v battery along with piezo buzzer which produces a beep sound when a person crosses over it.

O Resistor: In this the resistor R2 is used to prevent from false triggering. R4 is used for time setting of buzzer.

O Capacitor: The Capacitor 0.1µF is for clearing noise and Capacitor 47µF 25V is used for maintaining time constant and the capacitor is used (0.1µF) connects to ground.

• Transistor BC548: In Mat Switch we use two BC548 Transistors which are common emitter configured one is for input and other for the output.

TRANSISTOR BC548

ICNE555: In Mat Switch we use ICNE555 in Monostable mode pin 2 recieves the trigger input signal and the pin3 sends the out put signal.

PIN DIAGRAM OF ICNE555

Monostable mode: In this mode, the 555 functions as a "one-shot" pulse generator. Applications include timers, missing pulse detection, bounce free switches, and touch switches, frequency divider, capacitance measurement, pulse-width modulation (PWM) and so on.

Piezo Buzzer: The Piezo Buzzer produces a Beep sound When ever a person crosses over it, it produces sound for 4.7 seconds(Time constant T=1.1RC).

Battery : In Mat Switch we use a 9V battery.

A Mat Switch works by putting a voltage potential across the two pads and deforming a separate layer enough to let the one contact to touch the other and thus complete a circuit.

Assembly is very simple, make the circuit on the PCB by carefully soldering . Avoid loose connections.

Now take the two conducting pads(touch pads) and connect to circuit as indicated in circuit

Then connect a 9V Battery and a Piezo Buzzer to the Circuit

Check the continuity with the help of multimeter.

WIRING DIAGRAM:

WORKING OF MAT SWITCHO The Mat switch rests under a piece of carpet and sits on the floor like a

Welcome mat.

O The simple circuit produces a warning Beep when some body crosses a protected area where it is placed.

O When the circuit is in standby mode, transistor T1 does not conduct, since its base is floating.

O When the person walks, the switch is pressed and current flows through the R1 and the Switch to provide positive Bias to Transistor T1.

Transistor T1 conducts and its collector voltage drops, which acts as negative trigger for monostable wired ICNE555.

IC1 outputs a pulse of fifty seconds duration with preset values of R4 and C3.

The pulse is applied to Buzzer through Transistor T2. The Buzzer sounds a beep on unauthorized entry.

The pulse duration is changed to desired value by changing values of R4 and C3.

• Resistor R2 in the circuit makes the trigger pin of IC1 high to prevent false triggering.

• Assemble the circuit on a PCB and enclose in plastic case.

• Use a 9V Battery to power the circuit.

• Connect the touchpad switch to PCB and hide under the Mat at entrance. The PCB can be mounted on near by wall.

TESTING: When you have built the circuit you will need to test it. If the circuit does not work at all follow the following procedure

Check that the PCB layout is correct and that no tracks are broken Check that all soldered joints are good Check that all the components are connected correctly.EVALUATING THE ALARM: There are number of things to be

considered while

evaluating alarm How well does it work? Did you choose best input device for the job? Is it sensitive enough? Does the alarm work every time?

WORKING DESCRIPTION:

ADVANTAGES Mat Switch is a very cheap and very efficient protective device.

Mat Switch is very simple in construction.

Mat switch is more reliable.

Mat switch can be easily replaced.

The Mat Switch is practically invisible unless it is engaged.

The mat itself is light weight and often decorative , similar to a welcome mat that rest out side the front door of your building.

If it is not properly sited it may give false alarms because of pets, children etc., in night during armed hours

Furniture movement may give false alarms so it must be prevented when occurred.

It may not be useful if it is not properly used.

DISADVANTAGES

APPLICATIONS• It is a perfect low cost solution for monitoring large areas of floor

space.

• The mat is most often used in security applications

• It is also used for projects such as interactive arts, stage triggers for plays, animal behavior tracking and more.

• It can be used in museums, shopping malls etc.,

• The mat can be placed underneath carpeting.

As it is a security device, it can be used in different sectors. It can be used in important places such as Banks, Offices, Meseums, even at houses for protecting valuable equipment.

The mat switch is a perfect low cost device used for security purpose.

CONCLUSION

As the security system is a very simple system it can be used any where.

As the burglars are using latest techniques, The mat switch plays a crucial role in upcoming days.
