BROCHURE

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Course: Visual Communications: Section 4

Date:3/28/15

Programs Used:Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign

Description:Create a brochure for a company

Objectives:Using the Adobe Suite, create a brochure.

Process:For this project I thought I would create a brochure for something that I was passionate about. I love the outdoors especially snowboarding and mountain biking. I started by looking around on the internet for some inspiration and sketched out a design layout for the brochure.I started by creating the logo. For the logo I used the pen tool to create the mountains and then I added in the text. To manipulate the text to have a mountain look, I used the Direct Selection Tool to adjust the points in the logo. After the logo was finished, I opened InDesign and started creating the layout for the brochure. In InDesign, I used the Line and Pen Tool to create the border for the brochure. After creating the borders, I inserted the images as well as the wrapped image into the design. For the bottom red border, I simply used the rectangle tool and added some white text on top of it. That was about it!

Programs Used:Text Wrangler

Description:A web page designed to showcase a logo that I created.

Objectives:Using HTML, showcase a logo on a webpage created in Text Rangler.

Process:To create the webpage I used a text editor called TextWrangler. Having no prior experience with HTML/CSS, I took the time to familiarize myself with the languages. I started by using Codecademy.com to learn the basics of the two languages, making sure to complete each lesson about the two languages. After I got the basics down, I started creating my own webpage.I did some research online about some modern websites and some different layouts. I saw a layout similar to this one so I decided to recreate it with my own content. I started by creating a container to hold all the content on the page and then I divided it into thirds for each section of the page. Starting with the left sidebar, I added in a profile picture of myself and some menu buttons which, for this project, I didn’t add any links. For the middle container, I added a title with a subtitle and then the logo. Underneath the logo I added in a small description with a button link, which I did link to my blog. The right tab was a little similar except I added a background image and then placed the text on top of the image.

Description:Create a new logo and use it to make a letterhead and a business card.

Objectives:Using the Adobe Suite, create a logo, business card and letterhead.

Process:For this project I used Adobe Illustrator to create the logo and then Adobe InDesign to create the Letterhead and Business Card. For the logo, I used the Pen Tool to draw the mountains and then rounded the edges to give it a smooth look. Next, I added some text to finish the logo. The busi-ness card wasn’t too difficult, I simply added the logo to the front of the card. For the back, I used the rule of thirds to display my name, the mountains and my position in the company on the left. On the right side, using the text tool again, I added in some information about myself. The letterhead was a little difficult. I started by adding in the transparent logo on the bottom right of the page. Using lines and a few boxes, I created some objects on the left of the page. I ended by adding in some text boxes to complete the page.

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Course: Visual Communications: Section 4

Date:2/14/15

Programs Used:Photoshop

Description:A spiritual message that demonstrates proper use of masking, filters and typography.

Objectives:Show proper use of masking to create a montage.

Process:This project was created in Adobe Photoshop. I started with the background image and added a “photo filter” to add more brown into the image. Next, I grabbed the picture of Christ and masked Him into the picture, creating a gradual mask from bottom to top. I placed a texture filter on the background image and used the brush tool to create large brush strokes/scratches on the image. A dark vignette border was used to create some darkness around the edges. Lastly, the typography took by far the longest but after some thought I felt like I was able to arrange the words effectively and decide on a great color scheme.

Date:2/7/15

Programs Used:Photoshop

Description:Show proper use of photography and photoshop adjustments while including an appropriate color scheme.

Objectives:Create an event flier/ad.

Process:In creating this ad I started with an idea which lead to the overall picture. The picture was taken in an empty warehouse with two studio lights. I lowered the shutter speed to allow light in but still maintain a dark background. After a lot of trial and error I got the image I had envisioned. While in photoshop I adjusted the color levels to darken the background to keep the focal point as bright as possible. While still using photoshop I added in the text and some colored boxes to complete the ad.

LOGO

Course: Visual Communications: Section 4

Date:2/21/15

Programs Used:Illustrator

Description:Three logos created using the Adobe Illustrator.

Objectives:Using the Adobe Illustrator, create three logos.

Process:To create these logos I used Adobe Illustrator. I started by brainstorming the message and the company itself. After sketching out a couple ideas, I started by using the shapes tool to make the border of the logo. After, I used various other tools like the pen and paint brush tool to draw the objects. For the middle logo I used the rotate tool to create a stylish circle around the logo. I looked a lot to google for help with some of the tools but for the most part, I didn’t do anything too tricky.

EVENT AD

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Course: Visual Communications: Section 4

Date:1/31/15

Programs Used:Microsoft Word

Description:An event flier for a snowboard competition.

Objectives:Using a scanned image, create an event ad using Microsoft Word.

Process:With Microsoft word open, I inserted the scanned image and placed some text on top of theimage. As far as color goes, I wanted the ad to be simple. With a background full of color, I felt like if I were to add any color to the design it would be harder on the readers eyes. I personally felt like white contrasted well with the background and gave the event ad a very simple look and feel.

FLIE

R

Instructor: Ben Pingel

Course: Visual Communications: Section 4

Date:1/24/15

Programs Used:Indesign

Description:Black and White Flier advertising for a Leadership Conference for graduating seniors or graduates.

Objectives:Using the Adobe InDesign, create a Flier. Process: I started by sketching some designs that I thought looked unique and different. After sketching four designs, I asked a friend which one he thought had potential. I started designing the flier and as I went, I changed some things from the original sketch. Since this a leadership conference, I wanted to make sure that the audience knew that the flier was not a graduation announcement but rather a flier for a conference. I was given the image, logo and text. Placement was a little tricky at first but after a couple critiques, I knew where everything belonged.
