Podcasting: Introduction

 • Podcasting is used to post audio and video files

onto the internet for instant use. • Podcasts have web feeds known as RSS- Really

Simple Syndication which are sent to podcatching software such as iTunes.

 • Podcasts can be used in multiple media forms from

your home computer to your phone.

WHY USE PODCASTING?

How Can Creating a Podcast Enhance Classroom Learning?

Podcasting in the classroom

Benefits:• Project Based Learning•  Constructivist approach•  Creatively engages

the Digital Native•  Encourages higher

order thinking skills; critical thinking, analysis and problem solving

•  Allows students to upload to the class website.

•  Lectures/homework help can be utilized from the class website.

Cons:• Time consuming• Technology can be

challenging for some teachers

• Pictures and voice being made public ie. YouTube

• Pictures and audio would need parental consent

Students work and plan their podcast together

• Gives Students a Voice

They are allowed to share their thoughts and reach many people during the process.

• Authentic Audience

There is a global audience outside the classroom.

students’ work.

assignments or class tasks

•School news

•Local, National, International news

•Discuss topics that are taking place and how it relates to them or their studies

Audio books – record for themselves or for younger readers

Instructional guides – students create for each other. Or teacher produces to guide them.

Interviews

Interview members of staff, students, members of the community, and visitors to school.

Pupil Voices

Revision

Audio versions of lesson notes – important points and information. Student or teacher-created.

Pre-Production

• Plan the podcastThe finished product will be much better if a procedure is chosen and followed

• Gather equipmentYou will need a microphone and a computer

• Become familiar with softwareLearn the basics of Audacity

Production

• Rehearse the Podcast

Practice makes perfect. It will cut down on edit time!

• Record the Podcast

Now students are ready. Use a quiet room if possible.

• Edit the Podcast

Fine tune the podcast and add finishing touches.
