PMI Certifications

PMP CAPM Designed to objectively assess the competency of the experienced project manager

Designed for project team members and entry-level project managers

Must have between 4500 hours and 7500 hours depending on educational background and criteria for overlapping experience PLUS 35 contact hours of formal project management education.

Must have at least 1500 hours of work on project teams OR 23 contact hours of formal project management education.

Exam questions are more trivial, tricky and deep in the subject.

Exam questions are from the surface of the subject more about the process.

How do you get CAPM certified?

Completing the CAPM Application

• Writing Fees - CAPM– Fee: $225 members, $300 non-members– Rewrite: $150 members, $200 non-members

• Fees: quoted in US funds, GST applicable

The CAPM Exam

• 150 multiple choice questions in 3 hours

• Questions are knowledge based

• You have one year from date approved to write the exam

• Allowed to hold the CAPM designation for a maximum of 5 years

– Bachelor’s degree or global equivalent

• Category 2– High School diploma, Associate’s

degree or global equivalent

– Minimum 5 years’ unique non-overlapping project management experience during which at least 7,500 hours are spent leading and directing project tasks.

– Up to eight years allowed to accrue the 7,500 hours

– 35 contact hours of formal Project Management Education

PMP Credentialing Process

• Project experience must be in leading and directing project tasks (as identified in the PMP Examination Specification)

• Download copy of Project Management professional Credential Handbook

• Random audit notification comes after the eligibility notification is issued and payment of the exam fee is remitted

Completing the Application

• Complete application forms (education and experience verification) online at www.pmi.org

• Writing Fees – PMP– Fee: $405 members, $555 non-members– Rewrite: $275 members, $375 members

Fees: quoted in US funds, GST applicable

Completing the Application

• You will receive via email an Exam Eligibility Letter within 5 days of meeting criteria and submitting all documentation (ensure a valid email address is provided)

• PMP exam is offered via computer at the Sylvan Learning Centre at 17-200 Meadowood, St. Vital (see 2test.com for a complete list of computer based testing locations)

Completing the Application

• You have 1 year from date approved to write the exam

• You have 3 attempts to write and pass• Candidate will have to wait one year from the

3rd unsuccessful attempt before being permitted to reapply

The PMP Exam

• 200 multiple choice questions in 4 hours• Questions are mostly situational, may have 2

correct answers, however looking for the best answer

Maintaining your PMP

• To keep certification, the PMP must maintain a given number Professional Development Units (PDU) each period (60 within 3 years)

Why Study Groups?

• Great way to learn and have fun learning• Review the material with people who have a

different perspective• Exchange ideas• Get your questions answered• Share experiences• Network with a peer group• Peer pressure to maintain a study schedule

Suggested Study Group Format & Approach

• Meet no less than once per week– Plan for 2 hours per meeting– Convenient time & location– No distractions

• Plan for a minimum of 1 meeting per PMBOK section– 9 knowledge areas & intro, 12 weeks– Add couple of more weeks for organization and

review

What Makes an Effective Study Group Meeting?

• Commitment– $$$– Time - be prepared for 100 - 150 hours

• Weekly meetings• (near) perfect attendance• Everyone contributes• synergy

Suggested Study Group Agenda

• Every member reads all study material for the section– Review PMBOK section material first– You must know Processes, Inputs, Tools &

Techniques, Outputs– Discuss main concept & principles, formulas

• Establish reading material to be covered for following week

• Questions, questions, questions!!!– Each member creates 5 - 10 questions prior to

meeting each week and should include additional questions from various resource materials

Next Steps:

• If you have the required project management experience and education

– Decide if you are committed to working towards your certification formed from a time & cost perspective

– Study groups will be formed with other interested individuals

– You will be notified as to who will be in your group

– Select a location, day and time that is convenient to the group

– PMI will attend your first study group meeting to get your started

– Complete a sample exam (set a baseline)• Several exams are available on line

– Order study materials immediately (3-4 weeks)– Apply to write the exam
