2011 ANNUAL REPORT
Mission
Letter from the Executive Director
To present the breadth of California art and design through exhibitions that
explore the cultural dynamics and influences that are unique to California.
I am pleased to share with you our 2011 annual report, highlighting the Pasadena Museum of California Art’s activities and achievements over the past year.
2011 was a vibrant and rewarding year at the museum; we mounted nine exciting exhibitions, all but one was organized by the PMCA, and of-fered related programs ranging from Artist Talks to live painting demonstrations during ArtNight. Many of these exhibitions and programs were born out of important partnerships, including with Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL). This collaboration resulted in an interactive exhibi-

tion, Beneath the Surface: NASA’s Juno Mission to Jupiter, and the Day of Discov-ery, an all-day educational event featuring lectures by artists and scientists as well as demonstrations and art making. During 2011, the PMCA also partnered with the Getty Foundation for the Pacific Standard Time initiative, and prepared for the opening of our PST exhibition, L.A. RAW: Abject Expressionism in Los Angeles 1945-1980, From Rico Lebrun to Paul McCarthy at the start of 2012.
Last year we also deepened our commitment to the research of California art and design by publishing two exhibition catalogues—Roland Reiss Personal Politics: Sculpture from the 1970s and 1980s and Love Never Fails: The Art of Edouard and Luvena Vysekal.
The PMCA is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2012. There will be a year-long series of programs and events to honor this important milestone and celebrate a decade of accomplishments. We were thrilled to kick it all off with the opening of L.A. RAW in January, and look forward to the opening of the highly anticipated exhibition: Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey in June.
What we do at the PMCA is made possible in large part because of an enthusiastic staff and a dedicated Board of Directors. We welcomed three new Directors in 2011: Rob Levy, Robert Nydam and Charles Read, who bring with them an enthusiasm for California art and design as well as non-profit expertise and insight.
Of course, our success and accomplishments would not be possible without the loyalty and interest of our supporters and members. We appreciate all you do for our museum—thank you for your past support and we look forward to working with you in the decade ahead.
Sincerely,
Jenkins Shannon Executive Director

A century ago, the California Art Club was launched by a handful of European émigrés and plucky Americans who decided to make creativity their calling... The exhibition reflects how strong the plein-air tradition remains.
