• Picker Components was founded in 1983 with the mission of developing and manufacturing relays inAsia for distribution in the North American Market. Our commitment to quality sets the agenda fordesign and manufacturing.
• Where applicable, all of Picker Components relays are UL recognized and certified for Canada. Ourquality assurance process includes 100% testing during each stage of the manufacturing processguaranteeing our relays meet the published specifications. Our manufacturing facilities are ISO9001-2000 and ISO14001:2004 certified and have been issued an ISO/TS 16949:2002 certificate by TUV SUD.
• The critical conduction points of a relay are the contacts. Our superior quality contacts are made underthe most exacting requirements and we have the only major relay factory in China that does not useChinese made contacts. The actual formulation of Picker’s contacts is highly proprietary.
• Picker Components product range includes Automotive Relays, General Purpose Relays, Power Relays,Signal Relays and Solid State Relays. Our product line spans from the tiniest fractional current ratedsignal relay to powerful 30 and 40 amp power relays.
• Over the years, Picker Components has many firsts to its credit, including the first 2 pole 25 amp powerrelay to compete with expensive contactors and the first to offer a second source for the popular T stylerelay. Picker Components exclusively markets the 20 amp PC520 in North America. Our most recentintroductions are the PC730 and PC740, 30 and 40 Amp power relays designed for the higher powerindustrial markets.

Contact, Dry Circuit: A contact that carries current but neither opens nor closes while its load circuit is energized. Erroneously used if referring to low level contacts.
Contact Follow:The further specified movement of the contact tips (points) when making and after they have just touched and while they are traveling in the same direction as that of the moving contact member.
Contact Form:Relays have been developed to perform various switching functions and the various operating modes are called contact forms. The most popular contact forms are listed below.
Contact Low Level:Contacts that control only the flow of relatively small currents in relatively low-voltage circuits; for example, alternating currents and voltages encountered in voice or tone circuits, direct currents in the order of microamperes, and voltage below the softening voltages of record for various contact materials (that is 0.080 volt for gold, 0.25 volt for platinum, etc.). Also defined as contact switching loads where there is no electrical (arc transfer) or detectable thermal effect and where only mechanical forces can change the conditions of the contact interface.
Contact Material:Contacts are usually an alloy of silver and sometimes pure silver. Silver cadmium oxide, AgCdO, and silver tin oxide, AgSnO, are preferred materials for high power applications. Gold flashed silver, AG + Au or gold flashed silver nickel, AgNi + Au are preferred materials for signal level applications. New materials are being developed all the time.
Contact, Movable:The member of a contact combination that is moved directly by the actuating system. This member is also referred to as the armature contact or swinger contact.
Contact, Normally Closed:A contact combination which is closed when the armature is in its unoperated position.
Contact, Normally Open:A contact combination that is open when the armature is in its unoperated position.
Contact Ratings:These are the load ratings established by testing laboratories expressed in amps at certain volts or in the case of relays with inductive ratings horsepower at certain volts. In the case of our signal relays, minimum loads are also shown.
Contact, Stationary: A member of a contact combination that is not moved directly by the actuating system.

Relay TerminologyAgency Approvals: Refers to certification by a testing laboratory. The certifying body deems a relay to be safe within the safety organization’s guidelines. The term “Approvals” is used as a general term. The proper term for the Canadian Standards Association, CSAs approval is “Certificate of Compliance”. For Underwriters Laboratories it is “Component Recognition”. For other testing bodies around the world the terms varies but means the same general thing.
Relays are considered “Components”. That is, a component of a more complex finished product. It is the finished product which must be certified, having approved components only makes that process easier.
In the United States, the predominant testing laboratory is Underwriters Laboratories. With the establishment of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, UL has been able to certify products for not only the U.S. but also for Canada and CSA can certify for the US. ( ) is the symbol indicating that a relay is certified by UL for both the U.S. and Canada.
Ambient Temperature:This is the temperature of the environment in which the relay can safely be operated. Since relays generate some heat in their operation both from the coil and the electrical current they are switching, the ambient temperature will be somewhat less than the non operating storage temperature.
Armature: The moving magnetic member of an electromagnetic relay structure.
Bobbin: A structure upon which a coil is wound.
Break:The opening of closed contacts to interrupt an electric circuit.
Bifurcated Contact: A forked, or branched, contacting member so formed or arranged as to provide some degree of independent dual contacting.
Bistable Relay:A bistable polarized relay is a 2-position relay that will remain in its last operated position keeping the operated contacts closed after the operating winding is de-energized.
Coil:An assembly consisting of one or more windings, usually wound over an insulated iron core or on a bobbin or spool, or self-supporting, with terminals, and other required parts such as a sleeve or slug.
Coil Power:Coil power is for DC relays is expressed in fractions of a watt and for AC relays in VA, volt amps. For some relays more than one sensitivity of coil is available. See the build a part number portion of this cat-alogue for information on specifying coil sensitivity.
Coil Voltage:The listed voltages shown in direct current volts, VDC, or alternating current volts, VAC, are the standard voltages shown for each series relay. Other coil voltages may be available on special order. Contact Picker Components for availability.
Contacts:Contacts are the metal conductors which are brought together to complete the circuit or pulled apart to break the circuit. The contacts are probably one of the most important parts of the relay.
Contact Gap. The gap between the contact tips (points), under specified conditions, when the contact circuit is open.
Contact Force. The force which two contact tips (points) exert against each other in the closed position under specified conditions.

Contact WeldA contacting failure due to fusing of contacting surfaces to the extent that the contacts fail to separate when intended to do so.
Contact Wipe: When a contact is making, the relative rubbing movement of contact tips (points) after they have just touched.
Dielectric Strength:This rating, often called Hi Pot, is the 50/60 Hz rms voltage that can be applied to the relay in certain ways before a arcing or “Breakdown” occurs. In this catalogue dielectric strength is listed for several portions of the relay. These are “Between Open Contacts”, “Between Contacts and Coil”, “BetweenLive Parts and Ground”, and “Between Poles”.
Electrical Life:This figure, usually 100,000 operations, is the expected life switching the relay’s full rated load. The expected life of a relay being used at less than it’s maximum load will be somewhere in between it’s mechanical life and it’s electrical life.
Insulation Resistance: The DC resistance between input and output of solid state relays and across contact and between contacts and coil for electromechanical and reed relays.
Mechanical Life:This figure, usually around ten million operations, is the expected life for the relay when it is not switching a load of any kind.
Options:These are features that can be included in the relay to suit the customers application. Some of these options are LED indicators, internal diodes and or resistors, push to test buttons and different styles of mounting flanges.
Relay:An electrically controlled device that opens and closes electrical contacts to effect the operation of other devices in the same or another electrical circuit.
Relay, Latching: A relay that maintains its contacts in the last position assumed without the need of maintaining coil energization.
Relay Life:Relay life, which is shown as a number of operations, is the expected life of the relay.
Relay, Polarized: A relay whose operation is dependent upon the polarity of the energizing current.
Relay, Power: A relay with heavy-duty contacts usually rated 15 amperes or higher. Sometimes called a contactor.
Relay, Sealed: A relay that has both coil and contacts enclosed in a relatively airtight cover.
Relay, Sensitive: A relay that operates on comparatively low input power.
Terminal Type:This is the type of electrical terminal that is available for each relay. Some of the relays are available with several different types of terminal.
