How to find professional literature and scientific articles for study and research

• Internet? Google?Possibly: scholar.google.com

• Look through volumes of Journals in the librarySearch in databases and catalogues

• Attend the Workshop Information Literacy and find your way to the Fontys databases

What is full text?

• The complete article is on-line available

– PDF

– HTML

Why are not all articles full-text available?

• A number of databases contain only references

• A number of Fontys subscriptions cover only literature from the last 5 years

• A number of Fontys subscriptions is only valid for a part of the full text database (cost factor)

• Publisher’s embargo(most recent literature is often not full text available)

Content of the workshop

• Orientation on your assignment (subject and search terms)

• Acquisition of information (search for information in the databases)

• Selecting relevant information

• Producing a bibliography, paper.

Assignment:

• Formulate your subject; if possible use a PICO• Perform a search in

– At least 3 specialist databases : Cochrane, PEDro, Pubmed– Skip Fontys Catalogue, Fontys FELIX, Google

• Save relevant search results on your Memo. If there is not enough space on your Memo, save the results in Word using copy-paste.

• Full-text articles can be saved directly as PDF or as HTML copy and pasted in Word.

• Read the instruction page of the Workshop

• Chapter Acquisition > Fontys Information sources: Healthcare Cluster

• Chapter Acquisition > Fontys Information sources: use original interface (do not use the FELIX search box)

• Make use of A-Z Fontys eJournals

NB• Answers in the Workshop text boxes will be saved on ‘My Memo’

• At the end of the session, do not close the Workshop before sending “My Memo” by e-mail!

How to recognize full-text articles ?

• in Felix; database contains full text articles, this does not mean that all articles in the database are full text

• HTML full text and PDF full text in Academic Search, Cinahl en Medline (result list)

PubMed (click on the article from the results list, to see full text banners)

Tips full textIf the article is not full text available in the database

• Search for the title of the article– in Fontys FELIX (http://www.fontysmediatheek.nl/felix)

– in Google

• Search for the title of the journal

– in Fontys FELIX A-Z Fontys eJournals

– in Fontys Catalogue

– in PiCarta >> ILL-request
