Photosynthesis

Engage: Warm Up

Graph the following information to the best of your ability. Remember… where does the dependent variable go? Where does the independent go?

A student is observing how tall a plant will grow in different amounts of light. This is what they found after letting the plants grow for 3 weeks:

Plant in the window: 10 inchesPlant sitting near lamp: 8 inchesPlant sitting inside of a drawer: 3 inches

5. Where does it happen in the cell??

6. What does a

chloroplast look like?

Draw in your notes… a circle with

something that looks like stacked on the

inside.

7. What 2 structures are in plant cells only?

8. What gas is TAKEN IN during photosynthesis?

8. What gas is TAKEN IN during photosynthesis?

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Carbon Dioxide enters the plant through stomata (tiny holes) in the leaves.

9. What gas is RELEASED during photosynthesis?

9. What gas is RELEASED during photosynthesis?

Oxygen (O2)

Oxygen leaves the plant and humans and animals breathe it in!

10. Draw out what photosynthesis looks like ….What goes in?What comes out?

11. Does photosynthesis release or absorb energy?

Light Energy!

CO2 + H2O +

Carbohydrates(glucose) + O2

11. Does photosynthesis release or absorb energy?

Light Energy!

CO2 + H2O +

Carbohydrates(glucose) + O2

Photosynthesis absorbs energy from the sun.

12. What 3 Factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?

CO2 + H2O + Sun Light Gives you

13. Where does carbon dioxide (CO 2) come from?

CO2CO

CO2

CO2

Humans (and other organisms) breathe in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

14. What is the difference between a heterotroph and autotroph?

• Heterotrophy are consumers who survive off of plants.

• Autotrophs are plants that make their own energy.

15. What organisms release carbon dioxide?

(Heterotrophs)Humans…Dogs…Cats…Fish…Insects…And the list goes

on…

16. What organisms release oxygen?

“Autotrophs”(Plants!!)Flowers…Grass…Trees…Shrubs…And the list goes on…

SAV PLANTS

Marine Environment ConnectionSubmerged Aquatic Vegetation

• Video on secchi disc and water clarity.

• How is the secchi disc used? Why is water clarity important to the process of photosynthesis?

SECCHI DISC

Station 1-What is wrong with this picture?

How are the SAV plants an indicator of good health in the Bay?

Station 2-What is GOOD about this picture?

How is the reading on this sacchi disk? Explain how this will affect SAV plants.

Station 3-What is wrong with this picture?

How is the reading on this sacchi disk? Explain how this will affect SAV plants.

• Compare these two pictures. Which reading would be more advantageous for SAV plants? Why?

Station 4-What is happening with this picture?
