GPS and Class Objective

S4E2 b. Explain the sequence of the phases of the moon.

The students will be able to label the 8 phases of the moon in the order that they appear on paper with 100% mastery.

Moon Review

The moon is Earth’s only natural satellite.

The Moon does not produce light itself. What is seen is reflected sunlight.

The Moon rotates around the Earth. The same side of the Moon is always

facing the Earth. The first astronaut on the Moon was

Neil Armstrong on July 20th, 1969.

New Moon

The Moon appears dark, because the lighted side is away from the Earth. The

Moon is aligned with the Earth and Sun.

Waxing Crescent

As the Moon revolves around the Earth, a silver of light on the right

side of the Moon is seen, forming a crescent. As the amount of

illuminated area increases, this is termed “waxing”.

1st Quarter Moon

This image occurs when the Moon is about a quarter of the way in its revolution around the Earth. Although it looks like half of the Moon is illuminated, we see half of the half that is facing earth. This is called the first

quarter phase.

Waxing Gibbous Moon

More than a quarter of the Moon is illuminated, but less than a full

Moon. “Waxing” means increasing or growing larger.

Gibbous means more than half, but less than full or bulging.

Full Moon

When the Moon is halfway through its orbit, the half that faces the Sun is totally

illuminated. This occurs two weeks after a new Moon. The Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a line. If they are perfectly aligned, there is a

lunar eclipse.

Waning Gibbous

As the Moon continues the second half of its revolution, the amount of lighted area that’s seen decreases. In this phase, on

the left side of the Moon, a little less than a full Moon is seen, but more than the third

quarter Moon.

Last (Third) Quarter Moon

Sometimes this is referred to as the third quarter Moon. After about three weeks

from the beginning of the cycle, the Moon is about three quarters through its

revolution, and the left half of the circle is illuminated.

Waning Crescent Moon

The Moon is close to completing its revolution, and only a silver of light is

visible on the left side of the Moon. There will soon be a new Moon, and the cycle

will start over again.

it?

Full Moon

It’s going, going, gone! Homerun! The score is Waxings- 4, Wanings- 0.

The Waxings are now in the field and the Wanings are in the dug-out. Up to bat first

for the Wanings is #6 Waning Gibbous.

Waning Gibbous Moon

Waning Gibbous pops a fly ball to right field. The Waxings miss the ball, giving Waning Gibbous just

enough time to make it to 1st Base. Up next is #7, Last Quarter.

Last Quarter

Last Quarter hits the ball. The Wanings are now on 1st and 2nd

base. Next up for the Wanings is #8 Waning Crescent.

Waning Crescent
