Personas
”The magic leap”
Primary and secondary personas
» There must be a primary persona
» Each primary persona should have it’s own interface
» Secondary personas comes…secondary
» We are not designing for everyone!
Persona components
» One sheet!» Name, picture» Description» Goals
» Practical goals» Personal goals» Corporate goals» False goals
Creating personas
» Start with persona hypothesis» Perform user research (not
market survey» Identify behavioral variables» Identify clusters personas» Convert behavioral variables
to bullet in descriptions» Identify goals using variables
and raw data
Use of personas
» Generate requirements through scenarios
» Focus the design- and development process
» Communicate requirements

Scenarios as a tool for design
”Inga is a specialist on medicine and is very experienced with x-ray diagnostics. Sje has a few moments to spend before the next clinic meeting and she decides to take a look at the new x-rays of the suspected liver tumour that she encountered last Tuesday. She doesn’t remember what the patient was called and don’t want to bother the reception to get the name. Instead she turns to the computer, identifies herself and selects the newest examinations that she has done. There he is, halfway down the list: John Anderson, 68.
In the summary she sees that the new images are done. She brings them to the screen and selects some that are more clear than the others. If the shadowy part in the middle of the liver has grown during the past weeks it’s almost certain a tumour. She gets some earlier images from the same camera angle and puts them beside the most recent one on the screen. It’s too obvious: it’s got to be a tumour. She doesn’t even need to ask the computer to calculate differential images to feel sure.”

Kerstin

Innan hon blev arbetslös jobbade hon i butik.

Example: goal-oriented design
Example: create a CV» Current design fulfills business goals (gather data) but
not persona goals (create a beautiful and professional CV)
Example: goal-oriented design
» Focus on persona goals» Start with final view» Format options
» Business goals are realized indirectly
Example: understanding user groups
» Job-seekers» Unemployed
● Long term● Short term
» Employed● Active● Passive
» Employers» Large organizations» Small companies
» Info-seekers» Interested parties in the labor market» High school career advisors
» Jobcentres employees
Same persona
» The hypothesis represented an internal categorization of user groups
» Long term unemployed and passive employed displayed similar patterns of usage
Example: goal oriented information architecture
» Different personas have different goals
» Each primary persona should have their own interface
» Three primary personas –three interfaces
