From Mercado to Rizal

• Domingo Lamco, Jose Rizal’s great-great grand father on his father side, opted to adopt the surname “Mercado” which suited their profession, “Merchant” or Businessmen.

• November 11, 1849, Gov. Gen. Narciso Claveria y Zaldua issued a decree requiring the use of Spanish surnames.

• Don Francisco, Rizal’s father, chose RIZAL, a variation of Ricial, meaning new pasture or greenfield.

The Secret of Rizal Family• Rizal Family belonged to the principalia, a town aristocracy in

Spanish Philippines.• Lorenzo Alberto, having helped the Dominicans in their missions in

Indo-China was conferred the title “Knight of the Order of Queen Isabella the Catholic“, a title transferrable to one of his children after his death.

• When Lorenzo died, his children — illegitimate in papers — devised a plan to keep the title and their strong ties with the Spanish government. Jose Maria Alonzo de Alberto disowned his real mother, Brijida Quintos, and declared himself (with the approval of his siblings) the legitimate son of Lorenzo Alberto and Paula Florentino.
