Dominic Monkhouse, MD of Peer 1 Hosting UK said: “For many businesses, the
events in London this Summer bring the potential of increased business whilst also
presenting potential of increased complexity. We have had a number of enquiries

PEER 1 Hosting's 'Team 2012' Keeps London Businesses Online During Summer Events
Southampton: PEER 1 Hosting, the global online web hosting provider, has
announced today the launch of its own "Team 2012" to offer assistance to
businesses needing to stay online during the events taking place in London this
summer. The move is in direct response to Government warnings to London
businesses about disruption they may encounter as a result of events taking place in
the capital.
In its booklet, "Preparing your business for the Games", LOCOG warns:
"In developing your business continuity plan for the Games you will need to ensure
that any increase in homeworking is supported by appropriate IT, and that internal
systems and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have been engaged in the planning
process so that the demands on the system can be understood and managed.
It is possible that internet services may be slower during the Games or in very
severe cases there may be drop outs due to an increased number of people
accessing the internet."
Dominic Monkhouse, MD of PEER 1 Hosting UK said: "For many businesses, the
events in London this Summer bring the potential of increased business whilst also
presenting potential of increased complexity. We have had a number of enquiries
from businesses based in and around London and the South, who are dependent on
the internet, whether it's for back office SaaS applications, ecommerce sites,
customer service portals, virtual training or anything in between, who want to make
sure their business benefits rather than suffers from the increased activity on the
capital.
PEER 1 Hosting is uniquely positioned to help organisations doing online business in
London during the summer events. Our wholly owned and managed 10Gbps
FastFiber Network™, Portsmouth Data Centre, High Availability and Disaster
Recovery Services and Content Distribution Network (CDN) are designed and
managed to deliver uptime and reliability at all times. And because they circumvent
the network quagmire that will be London during June and July, businesses that
need to be online nonstop can stay online nonstop."
PEER 1's Team 2012, has its own phone line: +44 (0) 2380 926 309 and email
address: team2012@peer1hosting.co.uk which enables business leaders concerned
with uptime during this summer to discuss concerns and potential solutions with
dedicated experts. The company has also created a specific web page with

Stay online during the Olympics By Dominic Monkhouse
The London 2012 Games are a huge business opportunity – but also a huge technical challenge. Intelligent hosting is the key, says Dominic Monkhouse of PEER 1 Hosting
The London 2012 Olympics are all but upon us – which is a good thing for sports fans all over the world, but not
so good for the people responsible for avoiding site downtime as technical infrastructures are put under immense
pressure. Work will have to continue under what will feel like unprecedented circumstances, particularly in
London itself.
For many businesses, the Olympics bring the potential of increased revenue while also presenting potential of
increased complexity. At PEER 1 Hosting, we have had a number of enquiries from businesses based in and
around London and the south of England who are dependent on the internet – whether for back-office SaaS
applications, ecommerce sites, customer service portals, virtual training, or anything in between – and who want
to make sure their business benefits rather than suffers from the increased activity in the capital.
The logical thing to do will be to let people work flexibly. Jobs that don’t need face-to-face interactions with
customers can be carried out remotely by anyone with a net connection. And there’s the rub.
The numbers of the beast
The London Olympics may introduce systemic outage to an uncomfortable number of customers. Consider the
following statistics:
There will be 10,500 athletes taking part in the Games
There are 8.8 million tickets available
The Paralympics add another 4,200 athletes and 2.2 million tickets
There will be 34 Olympic venues and 20 Paralympic venues
Publication: .net

PEER1hosting@championcomms.com Champion Communications Ltd. 3rd Floor Radiant House, 36-38 Mortimer Street, London, WIW 7RG
The scale of the event only truly sinks in when you consider those numbers. Moving people between venues is
clearly a major issue, alongside countless other logistical considerations.
This struggle is a shame because the Olympics themselves will bring a lot of money and opportunity to the
capital. To take advantage of these opportunities, businesses will need their systems to work reliably, every time,
without question.
The UK government is advising people to turn off bandwidth-hungry applications like video streaming. This works
in principle, but there are bound to be staff who want to take a squint at the athletics. And people wanting to work
from home – a sensible option for many – will want to video conference.
This is not the place to discuss general policies on working from home as a productivity measure. However, it is a
fact that UK law now states that anyone with children may ask to work flexibly and be taken seriously, as long as
there is no business imperative to prevent it. Many people are already opting for what is commonly termed Bring
Your Own Device, in which they work with their own smartphone or tablet rather than getting one from work: a
great saving for their employers, but only if the network is working okay.
The need for intelligent hosting
A robust infrastructure is therefore a must for any business looking to avoid interruptions to its internet-dependent
systems throughout the duration of the Games.
Some hosting companies are now prioritising getting their customers through the Olympics as painlessly as
possible. They are fully aware that they are responsible for business infrastructures on which people’s livelihoods
depend and do not underestimate the stresses the Games will put on London’s internet infrastructure.
You should be looking for a solution that is walled in to ensure you are insulated from the worst of those stresses:
one that is contractually as well as technically robust. Above all, you should feel confident the provider has
exactly the right people in place to support it.
Using a provider that is experienced and an expert in its field, and which is also concerned to make its offerings
as ecologically sound as possible, will continue to pay dividends for a forward-looking business long after the
Olympics have been and gone.
The Olympics will be a great showcase for the capital if businesses get the chance to shine when the pressure is
on. The right hosting provider can take the stress off the business managers and IT departments, who can then
continue making strategic contributions, rather than fire-fighting difficulties that should never have arisen in the
first place.
PEER 1 Hosting has launched its own ‘Team 2012’ to offer assistance to businesses needing to stay online
during the Olympics. You can find out more on its website.

Olympics: How to keep the business online
We hear a lot about the Olympics and their effect on business; what's often overlooked though is the pressure they'll add on IT infrastructure.
By Dominic Monkhouse
The Olympics are all but upon us – which is a great for sports fans, but not so good for the
people responsible for avoiding downtime of businesses’ IT infrastructures.
Work will have to continue for businesses under what will feel like unprecedented
circumstances, particularly as London’s networks take on the trafficking of massive amounts
of new inbound and outbound data.
For many businesses, the Olympics bring some great networking potential, but they also
come with a lot of pressure. We - at Peer 1 Hosting - have had a number of enquiries from
businesses based in and around London and the South, who are dependent on the internet,
whether it’s for back office SaaS applications, ecommerce sites, customer service portals,
virtual training or anything in between, and want to make sure their business benefits rather
than suffers from the increased activity in the capital.
To take advantage of London 2012, businesses will need their systems to work without
disruption. Here are my top five tips in choosing a hosting solution to ensure that happens:
Publication: Real Business
Date: 17/07/12
PEER1hosting@championcomms.com Champion Communications Ltd. 3rd Floor Radiant House, 36-38 Mortimer Street, London, WIW 7RG
1. Ensure your solution is ‘walled in’ to ensure you are insulated from the worst of
stresses on London’s IT infrastructure. It needs to be contractually as well as technically
robust. This will guarantee peace of mind to you and those in your business to continue
business as usual even in the biggest net traffic storms.
2. Double check your SLA to ensure your provider has exactly the right people in place to
support the network, and ensure their support is available round the clock. Web hosting and
data centre experts understand the specific type of attention a business requires. If its
support is only 9 to 5 it’s likely their experience and expertise is limited.
3. Look into the history of your provider; does past experience and performance in crisis
management prove its worth? An international reputation in the web hosting marketplace
confirms a provider has the network security to persevere through an unprecedented event
like the Olympics anywhere in the world.
4. Look into the corporate social responsibility of your provider from a number of
different aspects. The ecological and conscious efforts of their offering should be in line with
those of your own business, as the media spotlight will be searching for business focus both
positively and negatively throughout the summer events.
5. Converse with your own team members; receive feedback and set out a strategy. Seek
advice on strategy from your provider surrounding telecommuting. If they have the right
experience and expertise, they can provide you with personalised advice from day one.
The Olympics will be a great showcase for the capital if businesses get the chance to shine
when the pressure is on. The right hosting provider can take the stress off the business
managers and IT departments, who can then continue making strategic contributions, rather
than fire-fighting difficulties which should never have arisen in the first place.

At the root of every eCommerce business is the host. Here we talk to Peer 1 about its data
centre services.
Please tell me about your business
We provide managed hosting, dedicated servers, co-location, and cloud computing, serving more
than 13,000 customers globally from 20 data centres located across the US, Canada and the UK. Our
goal is to build the IT infrastructure solutions that enable businesses to thrive online.
Where we achieve this and set ourselves apart is the quality of our technologies and overall customer
experience. This is what we refer to as Ping & People.
Who is the product aimed at?
Our services cater to all businesses from start-ups right the way through to large enterprises like
WordPress.com. We can support the hosting requirements of pretty much anyone.
What are the benefits for an eCommerce business?
We have key alliances with eCommerce platforms like Magento and Oracle ATG that offer businesses
performance optimised, cost effective, all-in-one eCommerce infrastructure solutions.
Successful eCommerce is dependent on a smooth and enjoyable experience and as such, it is crucial
to have speed and dependency from all aspects of the environment including the network, hardware
and software. We can contribute to a significant reduction in bounce rates and empty shopping carts,
which improve sales and your Google quality scores and rankings.
How much does it cost?
Every solution is a custom configuration that is based on a business’ unique needs and wants, and
we charge based purely on actual bandwidth use for maximum flexibility.
How does it work?
We offer co-location, dedicated servers, managed hosting services, private cloud services, cloud
storage, hosted email and cloud-based HPC (High Performance Computing). We manage and
monitor over 15,000 miles of 10Gbps dedicated network fibre to deliver high throughput and packet-
per-second capability. We built the network through a series of dedicated links between all 20 of our
data centres using multiple high-speed connections.

For businesses seeking an eCommerce hosting solution, you are put in touch with a sales engineer
from one of our Magento or Oracle ATG eCommerce partners and advised on the most suitable
solution.
What do I need to do once it is set up?
That depends on the services purchased. For example, our co-location services allow customers to
set up their own servers within a large data centre facility to take advantage of its power, network
redundancy and physical security advantages, while retaining full management control.
Dedicated server hosting is also available, which gives customers the option of selected servers to
lease in dedicated racks, benefiting not only from the added computing capacity, but also outsourcing
network security and infrastructure management to the data centre.
At the same time, the customer manages all applications installed on the servers. Our managed
hosting services provide comprehensive management that includes us deploying, configuring,
patching, troubleshooting and managing all leased servers, operating systems and infrastructure.

Creative agencies can run and scale their digital projects in the cloud with full control
By Greg Rusu general manager of Zunicore, PEER 1’s cloud division
The cloud has dramatically reduced the capital required to innovate across every
sector. But for all the promise of utility computing via the cloud, many creative agencies
– including web designers and developers, marketing agencies and ad agencies – are
struggling to realise the benefits. They have found themselves struggling to quickly and
cost-effectively manage on-demand computing resources to serve a global audience.
Those in the creative agency fields have to adjust their business models to keep pace
with technology changes. For web designers and developers, traditional desktop
software will eventually be replaced by cloud applications. Licensing will change to a

pay as you go model and investment will be made in this rather than existing desktop
software like Adobe’s product suite.
Though agencies by nature like to focus on the product they create, not the delivery
method, the internet has forced them to change their business models. They’re now
responsible for generating demand and fulfilling it. And today demand generation
almost always has an online and thus, strong viral component. In other words, a
campaign can instantly take off on Facebook or via Twitter or YouTube and
unexpectedly drive more traffic than anticipated. When that happens, the agency needs
to ensure that its client’s website can handle the spike. Unfortunately, many agencies
fail to rise to this challenge and instead stand by helplessly as the website scales
beyond the client’s allocated spend. Many more are forced to over-invest in computing
resources ahead of time as a fail-safe measure. Either way, they end up watching their
immediate profit margins and long-term profitability erode.
This element of risk has become part and parcel of the agency model. In other words,
clients now expect agencies to do more than come up with a creative idea and write
code; they expect them to handle every aspect of a campaign, including delivering the
campaign and microsite, and ensuring any online component supports millions of site
visitors without fail.
The key to tapping into the subscription-based revenues enabled by web-related
offerings such as hosting and search engine optimization (SEO) is to efficiently and
economically deploy infrastructure to support campaigns and promotions. After all,
tremendous revenues are at stake.
At its core, the utility aspect of cloud computing promised to help creative agencies
deal with the unpredictable nature of their business model and deploy and use
infrastructure on an as-needed basis – without much planning or forethought. But the
cloud hasn’t fulfilled the promise. In reality, it’s almost as complicated to bring up a
cloud instance as needed as it is to become a hedge fund manager. There is a lack of
control, inflexibility, over-complexity, difficult to use scaling tools, unreliability and
poor visibility.
All of these issues combined mean that developers end up spending tremendous
resources – notably in time and IT management – to launch and run their campaigns
and programs in the cloud. As a result, a failed campaign can tie up valuable resources
with little or no return for clients, while a winning campaign can easily exceed available
resources, leading to financial failure for the agency.
A need surfaced for a solution to specifically address the needs of creative agencies
with unique and changing technology requirements as they launch varying products on
the web. Web developers and designers should be able to instantly deploy feature-rich
PEER1hosting@championcomms.com Champion Communications Ltd. 3rd Floor Radiant House, 36-38 Mortimer Street, London, WIW 7RG
and optimised cloud infrastructure and automatically scale those computing resources
to support their campaigns and programs within an intuitive, easy-to-use interface. We
feel we have achieved this with Zunicore, the new cloud division of PEER 1 Hosting.
A fully user-controlled environment including customisable resource pools allows users
to increase or decrease the size of their pool, or add virtual machines based on their
business needs. This type of control also provides Overdraft Protection against the
users hosting cost. Persistent storage area network storage is more reliable and less
susceptible to data loss and offers higher performance than local storage devices, which
also incur additional costs. Hands-free autoscaling allows users to specify how much
they want to scale their resources based on user-defined thresholds such as technical
resources, cost or both. This makes over or under-investment a thing of the past.
We aim to offer creative agencies an unprecedented level of functionality so they can
focus on their business and not on the IT delivery vehicle. In other words, the service is
simple and intuitive to use and not a drain on the time and resources of in-house IT
people. As a result, they can now confidently launch programs designed to generate
unprecedented levels of traffic for their clients.

Five ways to keep your network up-and-running during the Olympics
Don’t risk an internet meltdown. Get your IT sorted to ensure your business makes it through the Games unscathed
By Dominic Monkhouse, MD EMEA, PEER 1 Hosting
The Olympics are all but upon us – which is a good thing for sports fans all over the world, but not so good for the people responsible for avoiding downtime of businesses’ IT infrastructures being put under immense pressure. Work will have to continue for businesses under what will feel like unprecedented circumstances, particularly as London’s networks take on the trafficking of massive amounts of new inbound and outbound data.
For many businesses, the Olympics bring the potential of increased business whilst also presenting potential of increased complexity. We have had a number of enquiries from businesses based in and around London and the South, who are dependent on the internet, whether it’s for back office SaaS applications, ecommerce sites, customer service portals, virtual training or anything in between, who want to make sure their business benefits rather than suffers from the increased activity in the capital.
To take advantage of the opportunities the Olympics is presenting, businesses will need their systems to work reliably,

every time and without question. Here are my top five tips in choosing a hosting solution to ensure that happens:
1. Ensure your solution is ‘walled in’ to rest assured that you are insulated from even the worst of stresses on London’s IT infrastructure. It needs to be contractually as well as technically robust. This will guarantee peace of mind to you and those in your business to continue company as usual even in the biggest net traffic storms.
2. Double check your SLA to ensure your provider has exactly the right people in place to support the network, and ensure their support is available round the clock. Web hosting and data centre experts understand the specific type of attention a business requires. If its support is only 9 to 5 it’s likely their experience and expertise is limited.
3. Prepare for any possible crisis; remove the looming risk of network failure. Prepare your business for load balancing through your ISP’s CDN (content delivery network). Whilst customers within London may receive a fast response from your website, those in other geographic areas outside London around the world are likely to experience a lag in their connection to your website during the summer games.
4. Optimising your online presence; look into enabling and optimising every angle of your online presence, re-assessing your network for efficiency and compatibility across different devices, platforms and business applications.
5. Converse with your own team members; receive feedback and set out strategy. Seek advice on strategy from your provider surrounding telecommuting. If they have the right experience and expertise, they can provide you with personalised advice from day one.
The Olympics will be a great showcase for the capital if businesses get the chance to shine when the pressure is on. The right hosting provider can take the stress off the business managers and IT departments, who can then continue making

strategic contributions, rather than fire-fighting difficulties which should never have arisen in the first place.

How to choose the best web hosting service Top tips on getting the best business web hosting service By David Howell
Avoid the costs of building a data centre like this 1&1 by choosing a web host
Today e-commerce has become a massively lucrative channel for retailers. However, the quality
of the hosting services that many small businesses are using often leaves a lot to be desired. A
recent report showed that one in three Britons have abandoned their online transactions because
of poor website design and inefficient hosting.
Research from hosting company 1&1's '2011 Digital High Street Audit' finds worryingly low levels
of consumer satisfaction with the small business websites available to them. The risk to firms
from providing a bad online experience is clear – 49 per cent of consumers believe that a bad
website makes a worse impact than a business having no website at all. This conclusion has led
37 per cent to walk-away from companies completely, in favour of using a competitor. An
additional 9 per cent of Britons have found themselves reducing their spend with small
companies as a direct result of being deterred by a poor company website.
Oliver Mauss, CEO, 1&1 Internet said: "Research shows that keeping an ugly or badly
functioning website online can comprise a risk to sales revenue. Consumers have ever higher
expectations, and it is essential that every company website inspires confidence. Businesses that
invest carefully in their web experience will see higher levels of customer spend, retention and
referral".

Choosing the right server to host your website
The hosting services your business can choose from will usually mean making a decision
whether a shared, dedicated or cloud based server is right for your business. Very small
businesses will usually opt for a shared or managed service as these are sometimes called.
Costs are low, but your business will be sharing its server with several other enterprises.
"Businesses that invest carefully in their web experience will see higher levels of customer spend, retention and referral". Oliver Mauss, CEO, 1&1 Internet
A dedicated server as its name suggests is just one server reserved for your business. Dedicated
servers are not as expensive as they once were and can make economic sense if you want your
business to have its own server platform and not have to worry about other businesses on a
shared server impacting your online business if they have problems.
It is important to look closely at the service level (SLA) that will be attached to your dedicated
server. Look for any additional costs such as maintenance, or other 'extras' that are not covered
in the rental cost. And lastly, try and buy server space that you can expand into. You don't want
to find after a few months that you have outgrown your server and need to move to a new one.
Lastly as the cloud has made a major impact right across the business environment, business
website hosting has also been touched by the cloud and now offers an alternative to the
traditional hosting methods. The power of cloud hosting is the flexibility it offers. In effect your
business can buy just the space and hosting services it needs now and expand at anytime with
no disruption to business.
Abby Hardoon, Founder and MD of second generation web hosting company Daily.co.uk says:
"Hosting is very much a horses for courses thing - it's a question of getting the best and most
appropriate solution that you can afford. There's no need to hamstring yourself financially,
though. If you're just starting out or you're a relatively small business and you know your way
around a server, you might like to consider a Virtual Private Server (VPS), for example - they
provide the flexibility of a dedicated server but at a reduced cost.
Your business hosting checklist
There's more to choosing a web host than just choosing the right server, you should also
consider other parts of the service including the domain name. Business host PEER 1 Hosting
offered this advice when choosing a hosting service for your business:
1/ Get the right domain name host
A search for 'domain name registrations' on Google generates a number of different companies
offering this service. Always read the small print on any domain name registration to ensure it is
not going to be sold from under your feet in a year, once your website is established, or that the
price isn't going to suddenly go up. If you have a very common name or are in a competitive
market then it is worth considering buying the other domain name extensions (.co.uk, .com, .net
etc) and pointing them to your website.
PEER1hosting@championcomms.com Champion Communications Ltd. 3rd Floor Radiant House, 36-38 Mortimer Street, London, WIW 7RG
2/ Do you host with your web designers or a third-party?
Once you have your website built you then have to find a home for your data to be hosted. Many
web design companies offer this as part of their service, however this locks your online business
into one company. Choosing a separate web host gives you more control and means that you
are dealing with the web host directly instead of through a third party. This can come in handy if
you anticipate spikes of traffic, perhaps as a result of a marketing campaign, and you need the
host to ensure your site does not collapse under this extra pressure.
3/ Read the contract small print
Many hosting providers will give you an all-in fee for set-up, hardware, operating system, support
and bandwidth. This may seem like an easy option but the problem with these deals is you can't
see exactly where your money is going, and so can't see if you're paying for things you don't
need. The best way to ensure you're not taken for a ride is to ask for a breakdown of services
and individual quotes for support, bandwidth, additional hardware etc. It's the only way to know
what's being delivered, what isn't, and what is surplus to requirements.
Often overlooked the hosting services you buy for your online business are vital to get right.
Consumers that have become highly critical of the online stores they buy from want to see solid
websites that perform efficiently and are available on demand. The right hosting service can
ensure your business becomes a destination site in its sector that your customers are sure to
shout about right across their social networks.

The Ins And Outs Of World-Class Data Centres
By Dominic Monkhouse,
The fast-moving world of the internet and e-commerce means that the need for a high-class data
centre to manage information is more important than ever. However, with so many services on the
market offering physical space to store servers, it’s important to define what separates the world-
class data centres from the substandard ones.
Power
As data centres store and manage important company data, it’s important to think about how
much power is used and where the power comes from. The amount of power needed to keep a
data centre running is startling. For example, when it comes to running data centres for the
biggest firms in the world – Apple, Google, Facebook – one data centre can use around one
hundred megawatts of power.
Publication: BCW
Date: 10/08/2012
PEER1hosting@championcomms.com Champion Communications Ltd. 3rd Floor Radiant House, 36-38 Mortimer Street, London, WIW 7RG
However, while most firms won’t need to use half of that amount, it’s important to remain
attentive to the impact of the environment from the use of this power. Organisations looking to
reduce their carbon footprint should pay particular attention to the efficiency and effectiveness of
the power used, as that is what separate world-class from sub-class – the use of clean power
and renewable energy.
Redundancies
The dependence on a stable, functioning business is critical when running a company. As a
result, downtime is an unwanted hindrance which can impact negatively on revenue, credibility
and client perception. In order to sidestep downtime, choosing a data centre with redundancies is
critical in that respect.
Providing at least two of everything, from generators and power feeds to cooling units, gives
businesses the opportunity to continue running as normal – despite any failure in a piece of
equipment. Furthermore, the presence of un-interruptible power systems (UPS) will also deliver
power regardless of any incidents that may occur. Of course, without data centre redundancy,
businesses are taking a big risk – a risk they could do without.
Location
The physical location of the data centre is also what separates the best from the worst. The best
location is one that adequately safeguards the technology inside, is close to multiple network
points of presence (PoPs) and allows for growth/change.
In addition, a data centre that resides close enough to the business is key, meaning employees
can reach it after a malfunction but leaving the centre far enough away so it isn’t likely to be
affected by a single disaster. For example, which would you choose out of a data centre housed
on a cramped flood plain in Japan and a large expanse of protected land in the UK?
Security
Security is paramount when trying to search for the best data centre. Physical security is often
neglected when it comes to IT management but the presence of on-site personnel can be
effective in creating a secure facility. A world-class data centre should be treated as if it were a
bank vault; given thick walls, no windows and limited entry points. Considering the importance of
the technology stored in the centre, it should not be an office where
people can simply wander into by accident. The presence of surveillance cameras can also be a
sign of a well-handled data centre. Increasingly, companies are outsourcing their data centre
requirements but are unaware of the difference between a high-quality centre and a poor one. As
a result, it’s important to consider the differences between the two before making a long-term
business decision.

PEER1 and Calyx Provide Colocation to Federation of Small Businesses
This Wednesday ,PEER1 Hosting, one of the leading globalhosting services providers and its strategic partner,
Calyx Managed Services, announced that they are jointly providing colocation services to the Federation of Small
Businesses (FSB), the largest campaigning group for self-employed or small firm owners in the UK.
The Federation of Small Businesses supports more than 200 thousand members and mentioned that in its recent
review of its IT infrastructure, it found that its IT hosting provider wasn’t able to meet the Company’s security
expectations. Owing to this, FSB turned to Calyx for solutions and then also considered PEER1 Hosting’s robust
and high performing cloud and colocation services to improve its Company’s IT infrastructure. The move was
done in May, 2012 and PEER1 and Calyx did it in a very smooth and professional manner. While the services
were turned off on Friday at 7PM, everything was moved to PEER1’s servers and the key services were up by
mid-afternoon on Saturday itself.
Both PEER1 and Calyx mentioned that they were happy to be selected by FSB and stated that PEER1’s
Portsmouth data center was selected to support FSB’scolocation and robust cloud requirements.

Peer 1 drops performance management in favour of employee pledges
Internet provider, Peer 1 Hosting last month scrapped performance management in favour of employee-led career promises. Sheila Bouman (pictured), chief people and performance officer at the organisation, which is based in Vancouver Canada, but last year opened a Southampton office, said: "I don't think most performance management experiences are rewarding, so we threw out the term. Instead we encourage staff to make a 'Peer promise', where they outline their aspirations to peers and management. I don't think performance mangement should be top-down, telling people what they should do - staff are adults. Visible peer promises mean employees take responsibility in strategy of the organisation. "We want to hire ambitious staff that share our values and we offer them coaching and mentoring to support this."

PEER 1 Hosting and Tier 3 deliver VMware-based enterprise cloud in the UK
PEER 1 Hosting and Tier 3 today announced a partnership to deliver VMware-based enterprise cloud to the UK market.
The solution combines hosting services from PEER 1 Hosting with the enterprise-grade cloud platform from Tier 3, and is underpinned by VMware’s vCloud platform; giving customers the ability to easily and successfully manage their businesses in the cloud.
Built with IT and development operations in mind, the enterprise cloud platform drives tangible return on investment, reduces time to market, makes it easier to manage complexity and minimises operational requirements. Customers will also benefit from local data centres and regionalised disaster recovery along with an expanding global footprint of cloud nodes.
Dominic Monkhouse, EMEA MD, PEER 1 Hosting: “If enterprises had unlimited budgets, this is the cloud they would build for themselves. By partnering with Tier 3, we are able to offer businesses a high performance cloud service that has business continuity built into its DNA on a utility basis. This combination of innovation and infrastructure is easy to manage and means that business leaders can finally stop worrying about issues such as security, backup and compliance, without having to invest in technology they are not using.”
Jared Wray, Founder of Tier 3 said: “Combining the power of PEER 1 Hosting’s superior network and infrastructure with Tier 3’s cloud platform gives customers in the UK a virtual cloud solution that streamlines their IT operations so they can focus on taking care of business.”
Unique automation technology eases the burden of managing everything from routine tasks to complex, enterprise-scale systems. Workload management, backups and other time-consuming IT tasks are automated, as are monitoring and reports to keep IT informed of performance.
Virtual machines can be managed in groups, making managing enterprise-scale infrastructures comprising hundreds of servers as easy as managing a handful.
Agatha Poon, research manager, global cloud computing for 451 Research: “Cloud providers have everything to play for in a fast evolving competitive landscape. A reliable cloud platform with continuous innovation combined with better and more ubiquitous service availability, and proactive management and support are core elements needed to earn the trust and loyalty of transforming enterprises.”

IBM looks to build out its cloud through partners
By Brandon Butler
Some have been waiting for IBM to make its big move in the cloud. Today Big Blue took a step in that
direction.
The company announced a training and partnership program aimed at increasing its channel
network selling its broad set of cloud offerings. IBM is making technical training and grants available
to fund investments in technology and marketing in an effort to build out its channel.
The move is the latest by a tech heavyweight reassessing its cloud strategy, as Dell in recent weeks
made an announcement to beef up its public cloud storage and HP has created a new organization
within its cloud division focusing on products and technology.
IBM officials say its move to push its partner ecosystem fits in with the company's broader cloud
strategy. The company already offers services for customers to build private clouds by using IBM's
PureSystems technology, which is integrated compute, storage and network hardware branded as
PureFlex. It also offers virtual machines and storage on the infrastructure layer, software as a service
(SaaS) enablement tools and a platform as a service (PaaS) for developers to build
new applications in IBM's cloud.
But today's move is aimed squarely at building up its channel partners. IBM is looking to expand its
partner ecosystem into the mid-tier of service providers, which 451 Research Group analyst Carl
Brooks says is a good move. Enterprises are increasingly looking to managed service providers to
make investments in infrastructure and cloud-based services as opposed to going directly to the
cloud service providers themselves. IBM is looking to expand the number of partners that can push
services based on its technologies. "This is where the market's going," Brooks says. He says the
company's broad set of offerings through PureSystems and Smart Cloud give IBM enough ammo to
make a formidable play in the channel market.
IBM says it already has a network of midsize providers, including Velocity, CenterBeam, Peer 1
Hosting, Perimeter and Oxford Networks, and this move will only build those out. IBM says it hopes
its total cloud revenue through all these avenues reaches $7 billion by 2015.

In addition to the technology investment and marketing grants, IBM will open four new Global
Centers of Excellence in Shanghai, Tokyo, Ehningen, Germany, and New York to provide the training
and then manage this new partner network.

IBM takes on Amazon, wades into medium size biz clouds
By Brid-Aine Parnell
IBM is about to start extolling the wonder of its cloud to medium-sized companies instead of sticking with its usual larger customers. Big Blue will the harness the power of a network of managed service providers in an effort to start a presence in a market dominated by companies like Amazon and Salesforce.
Beancounters at Gartner say that cloud services will grow nearly 20 per cent this year to $106bn worldwide as firms rush into the fluffy cumuli. But pay-as-you-use services from Amazon and the like are proving quite popular with the smaller firms.
So IBM is going in the same direction. It is using managed service providers (MSPs) to package out its SmartCloud, PureSystems and analytics services in their usual PAYG models. Big Blue's cloud services will go out through around 1,400 local MSPs – including Perimeter, Symmetry, Oxford Networks and PEER 1 Hosting.
"These new initiatives launched by IBM are unfolding new opportunities for our organisation not only to create new business opportunities with clients but also seize the opportunity to expand our global reach," said Craig Gunderson, CEO of Oxford Networks.
"The combination of IBM's technical expertise and focus on helping clients drive innovation with advanced technologies and its marketing engine will enable us to move beyond our traditional client base and reach new markets," he added, in an emailed release from IBM. ®
