DESCRIPTION

"Up to 895, the Pecheneg hordes had inhabited the grassy steppes lying to the east of the River Volga and north of the Caspian and Aral Seas. They are first mentioned in an eightcentury report, written in Tibetan, from an Uighur envoy. They lived on the open and wooded steppes of western Siberia, adjacent to related peoples of similar culture - Kipchaks (Qipchaqs), or Cumans and Kimaks, who spoke the same type of Turkic language as themselves-whilst in the southeast, towards the River Syr Darya, were the Ghuzz, or Uzes, of the Oghuz-Turkic group."
