From all this - we have been able
to draw conclusions and come up
with a list of actions that will go
some way to addressing the pres-

Scout Hall relocation projectScout Hall relocation projectScout Hall relocation projectScout Hall relocation projectHow we got to this point...This building was deconsecrated in 1982. Local families raised $15,000 at the time to pay the parish and it became theproperty of Scouting NZ with provision it be available for community use. It was maintained and used by local scout andguide groups until they ceased to operate. Now that the site is to be sold, Scouts and Guides NZ have indicated that theywould like to offer the building back to the community for our continued use.
At present the local primary school is utilising the building part time, and this will continue after it has been resited.Relocation of the building would allow community renovation to take place, and give all members and groups of thecommunity the opportunity to use it. If this does not occur at the same time as removal, we envisage the possibility thatthe building will deteriorate and be less likely to be retained.
Local history searches have ascertained that the church was built in 1907 from swamp kauri milled from a local farm. Itis one of only a few local historic buldings in public ownership. Patumahoe has been targeted for growth in the Aucklandplan, and there is need to preserve our history and character.
Council approves in principle the proposed site which fits with neighbouring school, playground, sportsground, residential properties and walkways. The project has been well publicized with a notice in the village dairy, participationin an open day, and information in quarterly village newsletters. After the resiting we intend to canvas locally fordonations, products, skills and voluntary labour to complete the renovations which will be necessary.

Pest Control MeetingThe Whakaupoko West Franklin Landcare Group continues to promote pest control and the Group
hosted speakers from the Animal Health Board, to learn more. There was an update on the efforts to
eliminate TB from the AkaAka/Otaua area. It was interesting to learn of the AHB increasing use of
Chew Cards as a valuable tool to help make their pest control budget go further. Possums are so
attracted to the Chew Cards that AHB staff are using them in many situations not only to identify
where the possums are, but also instead of having to use pre feed options before installing traps or
bait stations.
WRC (Waikato Regional Council) along with NZ Landcare Trust and Connovations were also in
attendance to join in discussions about what options are available in the Otaua / AkaAka area for
pest control once the AHB eventually move on from their pest control responsibilities. It was made
clear that with a limited WRC budget and not a lot of significant land biodiversity, (compared to
many areas in the Waikato Region), the area would be unlikely to receive pest control direct via WRC
and contractors. Communities and landowners would need to take up the responsibility to maintain
the gains.
NB: Whakaupoko Landcare is appreciative of all the support there has been from both WRC & AC.
The reality of effective sustainable pest control, is that ongoing in this area it will not just be a
Regional Council responsibility.
Mauku StreamPreliminary work has a commenced on the Mauku Stream Project in an effort to clean the stream
from nutrient and soil run off. The Groups activities is to assist landowners who wish to participate
in the project with fencing and riparian planting. Simon Day and Fiona McDonald are the people
driving this exciting initiative together with Ewen & Bev McIntyre.
RevegetationFiona McDonald has kindly offered to propagate some natives for the benefit of the group.
Whakaupoko Landcare has agreed to assist where possible with this new development.
Chew Card Survey UpdateThere has been a good response to the first of the Chew Card surveys of the area with over 400 Chew
Card results already mapped. Long term the goal is to every year survey all bush in the wider area.
To see the preliminary results simply click on the web site
http://www.patumahoe.org.nz/environment-nature/. Click on the Chew Card map and you can view
where all Chew Cards were placed and see what was there. (White = nothing, P = possum, R = rat, F
= ferret/stoat/weasel. Initial findings are that where baiting has been regular at 3 – 4 times per year
there is excellent pest control. However where baiting has been less frequent or only just started
there is a surprising high incidence of pests especially possums. The message is simple – bait
regularly. If you suspect you have very high pest numbers contact Andrew Sinclair Ph: 09 236 3435,
email: theteam@crazycatch.co.nz
or Eli Ewens Ph: 0212757088, email:eli_ewens@hotmail.com to discuss knock down options. We have
also seen a surprising high incidence of ferret / stoat presence. Again however this was higher in
areas where bait frequency has been less.
End of Year Celebrations
The Groups end of year get together will be held on Sunday 4 December. Anyone

provide the priorities for the Village Plan. This document is available online - and can be
downloaded. As well as community consultation, we have contacted local government
and agencies, and planners to obtain relevant guidelines and perspectives.
At present, we are working with low impact design planners and have contacted an-
other strategic planner to take us through the final stages of this project. A public meet-
ing will be held early next year to relay the final draft to Patumahoe & Mauku residents.
