Integrated System for On-line TRace EXplosives

detection in solid, liquid and vapor state Antonio Palucci – ENEA FIM-FISLASProject coordinator

Start up

January 1st 2007

December 31th 2008

June 30th 2009

Summary

Our goals Achievements Opportunities

Main Aims Trace detection of high energetic materials (i.e. explosive

compounds and their precursors) with high resolution laser techniques

Development of two prototypes to be in future installed in check-in

Exploitation of possible integration

LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) for particles and liquids substances. Atomic technique

IR (Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy and/o laser Photo-Acoustic Spectrometer) for vapour absorption technique

Partnership ENEA project coordinator - National Research

Agency (Italy)

CNR – National Research Agency (Italy)

IPAC – SME (Austria)

vH&S – SME (Germany)

TelCon – SME (Italy)

RIS Carabinieri – Reparto Investigazioni

Scientifiche dell’Arma dei Carabinieri

Implemented high resolution laser techniques

LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) V. Lazic

LPAS (Laser PhotoAcoustic Spectroscopy) G. Giubileo

LRaman (Laser Raman Spectroscopy) S. Botti

CRDS (Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy) M. Snels

FT-IR (Fourier Transform InfraRed high resolution

spectroscopy) S. N. Cesaro

Materials employed NO real explosive samples or mixed compounds such as forensic exhibit Standard solutions of explosive compounds from different suppliers

(Sigma, Accustandard, CPS, Sigma, Carlo Erba) for calibration purpose

FTIR IFS 113v (Bruker) and IFS66 (Bruker) interferometers in the spectral range 10,000 ÷ 400 cm-1 at a resolution of 2 cm-1 or better.

LPAS (Laser PhotoAcoustic Spectroscopy)

SERS (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy)

New facility @ 7 micron

• Semi-conductor Quantum Cascade Laser, tunability electronic controlled

• Compact Photoacustic cell for trace detection
