PARTS OF THE EAR

Lesson for Grade 1-3

Our ears have 3 main parts:

•__ __ __ __ __ ear•__ __ __ __ __ __ ear•__ __ __ __ __ ear

The Outer Ear

1. __ __ ___ ___ ___ or auricle.• This is the part of the ear that people can see.• The main job of the outer ear is to collect

sounds, whether they're your friend's whispers or a barking dog.

The Outer Ear

2. Ear canal or auditory canalIt is where the wax is being produced.

The Outer Ear

Earwax contains chemicals that fight off infections that could hurt the skin inside the ear canal. It also collects dirt to help keep the ear canal clean

Middle Ear

The middle ear's main job is to take those sound waves and turn them into

vibrations that are delivered to the inner ear.

Middle Ear

1. EardrumIt is a thin piece of skin stretched tight like a drum. The role of the ear drum is to carry sound waves to the middle through vibrations.

eardrum

The eardrum separates the outer ear from the middle ear and the

ossicles (say: ah-sih-kulz)

2. ossicles

They are the three tiniest, most delicate bones in your

body.

1. Hammer2. Anvil3. Stirrup- the smallest bone in the body

When sound waves reach the eardrum, they cause the eardrum

to vibrate. When the eardrum vibrates, it moves the tiny ossicles — from the hammer to the anvil

and then to the stirrup.

The Inner Ear: Nerve Signals Start Here

1. CochleaIt’s a small, curled tube in the inner ear. The cochlea is filled with liquid, which is set into motion, like a wave, when the ossicles vibrate.

Inner Ear2. Semicircular canals These are three tiny, fluid-filled tubes in your inner ear above your cochlea that help you keep your balance. When you move your head, the fluid in the canal touches the tiny hairs.

Inner Ear2. Semicircular canals These hairs translate the movement of the liquid into nerve messages that are sent to your brain. Your brain then can tell your body how to stay balanced.

How to Take Care of your Ears

1. Protect your hearing by wearing earplugs at loud music concerts and around noisy machinery, like in wood or metal shop at school. Keep the volume down on your stereo, especially if you're in the car or wearing headphones.2. Don't go poking around in your ears, even with cotton swabs.
