iGuzzini - The History
and Company Philosophy
We have worked in and for “light”since 1958. This was the year when theHarvey Creazioni, a small company thatproduced lamps and chandeliers, wasfounded. Today we are the premiereItalian manufacturer in the “Lighting”market, and we rank among the topEuropean manufacturers.
We aren’t satisfied by simply makinggood lamps. We want be the creatorsof good lighting: light that shines in aroom, a house, a building, a museum,a cathedral, a company, a plaza, anairport, and, yes . . . even an entire city.Good lighting has to be created with theawareness that it has to integrate with itsenvironment, taking care not to invade it,darken it, or violate it. Light must berespected, and light has to, in turn, respect the nature of people and things.
The iGuzzini mission is therefore tostudy light, to know light and to make itknown; improving the integration witharchitecture through industrial design.Because of this, a large part of what wedo is to offer consultation on lightingtechniques, both in the design phaseand as an after-sales service.
Quality of light is essential to ensure theenjoyment of all green areas in publicand private parks and gardens.Designing the light in these areas cannot only enhance their natural beautybut also create a new dimension to thesame environment, giving it new life atnight. This guide is a tool that revealsthe potential of quality lighting design inparks and gardens offered by state-of-the-art technical lighting equipment andsystems. The guide addresses themes ofshape and design in terms of theirimpact on the landscape and illustratesthe infinite lighting control optionsoffered by devices able to meet anydesign needs and requirements, ranging from light effects todynamic and coloured light.
The guide looks at energy savingfrom the points of view of costsaving and of safeguardingenvironmental balance in general.Light quality is also enhanced byawareness of security matters affectingboth the systems themselves and theareas they light, by literally sheddingnew light on dark green areas anderadicating hidden dangers. This technical lighting plan will thereforehelp restore the usability of areas thatwould otherwise be no-go areas at night. The general topic also emphasises ourfull awareness of the battle thathas long been fought against lightpollution and in favour of lightingthat ensures visual comfort.
A series of projects exemplify possiblesolutions already undertaken in privateresidential gardens and recreationalgreen areas in relation to green urbanareas, providing direct evidenceof some very successful projects.

Design andIntrusiveness
Lighting is like furnitureand sculptures
Each landscape design has itsown special features, whichthe lighting design projectshould highlight and work with. The light fittings’ design shouldrelate to its context in a flexiblemanner, interpreting thecharacteristics of the differentlandscapes and their needs, thanks to a wide rangeof formal solutions.
Some outdoor spaces need objectswith a strong presence; objectsthat are able to mark their territoryin a distinct way.The light fittings should not onlybe functional, but also act assculptures, animating theirspace and giving it vitality andnew character. Light and shapecome together to create a lightfitting that works well with itslandscape and plays a main role inthe scenery. The resulting visualeffect is truly grand.
3
Concept
A light fitting becomesa part of the scenery
The main characteristicsof certain landscapes need, bycontrast, to be respected. Therefore, the design of a lightfixture should be sober and havechameleon-like shapes that fitperfectly in with natureand the elements that makeup the landscape. At times certain parks and gardenshave strong personalities becauseof the history behind them orbecause of the way they werespecifically designed.
Lighting needs to be discreet in thiscase; these spaces need lightingthat does not interrupt their naturalbeauty, but at the same time itshould silently bring it out.The formal design of some of ourproducts perform this functionmeticulously, enhancing nature andthe elements that are within thelandscape, experiencing artificiallighting that lives harmoniouslywith both what is new and whathas pre-existed.

Lighting Effects
Light scenery is a garden’s night-time look and feel. Lighting is usedwith creative intelligence, thanks tofixtures that offer infinite variationsfor a myriad of lighting projects. Each detail and each lightingelement contributes to a final resultthat will show the true nature ofa garden infused with new light, with a new night-time look that isunassuming by day.
Thanks to the new technologicallight fittings’ possibilities, lightis a real means to an end, defining the look of the night. It can take various forms andformats: light cuts and shapes, lighting for certain objects or areas, dynamic light movements, andcoloured lighting.

Adjustable optics
The use of adjustable optics allowsus to aim the light beam accordingto the effects that are desired. The light scenery project foroutdoor parks and gardens can usedirect lighting or diffused lighting,in order to bring out a detail or agroup of details, with a precisionthat has been used only untilrecently for interior spaces. The designer will thus have theability to focus on elements thatshould stand out and those thatshould remain in the background. The designer may decide whichparts of the night-time sceneryshould be brighter, a juxtapositionwith those that are left darker, painting the green landscape withlight and dark elements.
Dynamicsand light colour
Besides continuous lighting and itsmany effects, the new lightingsystems allow us to create dynamiclight, which is able to mutate andshow different aspects of thegarden after sunset. It is animated with movementthat creates a veritable dance oflights, which is by nature changingand untouchable, magical andmysterious.
The most recent lightingtechniques allow us to design witha true colour palette, both thanks tothe already tried and true colouredfilters that can be changed on thefittings, as well as with new LEDtechnology, which allows us topaint the garden with new andamazing chromatic hues.

Visual comfort
The pleasing nature of a gardenafter sunset hinges upon thequality of light that is used and thewellness that it is able to ensure.Because of this, it is imperativethat we pay attention to lightingas a service, which tries not todisrupt the user.
These fittings all have specialanti-glare solutions so as not todisrupt the user’s visual comfortLight has now become a pleasure;one that increases an open space’sliveability without having to createany kind of light pollution. The use of different power suppliesgives us the opportunity of usingwarm and cold lights based uponthe surface, in order to make themeven more alive and vibrant and tooptimize visual comfort as well.

Concept
Safetyfor all citizens
The quality of light is also seen byits ability to increase a location’ssafety, thereby eliminating thedangers that could hide in theshadows of the night.Too often, in fact, public parks andprivate outdoor areas becomeplaces that we keep away fromduring the night hours because ofsafety concerns that depend uponeither bad lighting or sometimesa lack thereof.
With an intelligent and efficientlighting system that stems froma well-thought-out lighting designproject, a park can be recuperatedfor its citizens, inviting them tovisit more often and improvingthe quality of social life.Lighting thus creates moreoccasions for outdoor socialactivities during our free time.

Cost Containment
Saving Energy
The great outdoors is a giantenergy engine that creates anecological equilibrium andcontributes to our well-being. This equilibrium must be upheldafter sunset as well, with well-litlandscapes, and by avoidingwasted energy; by saving energywhile keeping costs at a minimum.
In order to reach this objective, wehave enlisted the aid of electronicswithin each light fixture. Electronicsstabilize power of each light unit, prolonging the life of the unit andavoiding continuous replacementsand excess waste.Electronics also permit precisioncontrol of lighting intensity therebyeliminating overflow and excess.Energy dispersion is minimizedthanks to this stability.
And electronics also makesmaintenance of the lightfixtures so much easier, makingthe general system moreefficient and less costly.

Light Fixture Safety
No-skid glassand surfaces
We’ve chosen anti-slip surfacesfor all those fixtures thatare fully recessed into theground or in walkways. This way it is possible to utilize therecessed system to its maximum, allowing people to safely walk onthe entire paved surface, whateverthe weather conditions
Low temperature foraccessible accessories
Light fixture safety is of topimportance when designing alighting project.Safety is ensured first andforemost by keeping in mindthe safety of both the userand the technicians that installthe fixture, who are in contactwith it more directly. Thanks to a specific study oncontaining heat that accumulatesfrom light fixtures during operation,it is now possible to guarantee lowtemperatures. This is great newsand ensures that we are safe bothduring maintenance or whensomeone comes close to thefixtures by accident.
Anti-vandalism
We’ve paid special attention tomaking these fixtures resistant, which means that they cannot beuprooted or vandalized. This anti-vandalism feature is anextra measure of efficiency forprivate spaces, and it is absolutelyindispensable in public situations, where light fittings are exposed toinappropriate use or incivility.General safety (from the electricalcircuits to the resistance to waterpenetration) is guaranteed bycertification by third parties, which was obtained after severequality controls.

Coordinates
Maximum installationflexibility
A garden lighting project needsto have creative freedom, whichis made possible not only bya large range of light fittings, but also by coordinates. When a project needs a developedsense of continuity, productfamily coordinates ensurethat each unit plays a part incomposing the big picture. This guarantees applicationflexibility, freeing the design teamfrom any constraints or restrictions.
More designoptions
Coordinates let us obtain both asingular image and a big picture. They give us a complete rangeof design options. The different types of groundattachments and supportstructures, the use of various typesof lamps, the many sizes of fittingsavailable: these give us solutionsfor the entire design project. Many applications and solutions, yet a unique and overallharmonious end result.

Taormina (Me) - Italy: Timeo Grand Hotel
A private garden has always beena symbolic aperture into natureand an intimate place that you canshare. Showing its night-timebeauty is a joy and an invitationto live this space to the fullest. You can relax outside on a warmnight, and enjoy the spectacle ofnature with the perfect lighting.
Light should rest upon the mostimportant elements of thelandscape: each detail needsto have customised lighting;lighting that interprets itspersonality and respects thebig picture, the equilibriumbetween full and empty space.Light accompanies and at the sametime marks pathways, meanderingalong small roads or climbing upgazeboes, beams and pergolas.
A green plain or a pond where youcan see your reflection: these needdiffused and quiet lighting.Main entrances and pathwaysthat lead to them need to beenhanced by bright lighting, ableto signal the passageway from apublic area to a private and moreintimate area.

For the Villa Brachetti lightingproject, the first objective wasaccenting the portico. We decided to light the porticoonly internally, without playing toomuch with its exterior so that thelandscape around it could be leftuntainted. Lingotto gives off abeautiful indirect lighting whileguaranteeing the visual comfortof those who utilizethe portico’s covered area.
The location’s importance wasenhanced, yet it was donediscretely, making the spaceeven grander, but withoutexcess or theatricality, which would have damagedthe landscape on the whole. The landscape was brought to lifewith Light Up, with spot and superspot optics. They were placed at the base ofsome foliage, creating great valuewith the landscape’s verticalelements.
For those who like to take night-time strolls, the internal pathwaysof the garden were brought outwith Walky and Miniwalky withdiffusing satin-finish glass.Villa Brachetti’s lighting is not onlyaesthetically pleasing; it also actsas an indispensable service to thegarden after sunset. The lightingsystem uses low voltage compactfluorescent lamps, which havelonger lives, are more reliable, andkeep energy consumption in check.

Today all kinds of architecture arecoupled with green areas that fit inwith the overall aesthetical appeal. For wellness centres and beautyspas, for company gardens, forrestaurants and hotels: landscapesare more than just accessories. They become the exterior versionof a broader spatial concept, anelement that has a say in whetherthat space is enjoyable or not.In the past, interior and exteriorwere separated.
Today they are open tointerpretation, and architecturalelements and landscapes arebuilt together harmoniously. If by day it is the landscaper’s job tobring out the architectural conceptas a whole, by night it’s up to thelighting designer to unveil theintimate beauty of the space andmaintain the balance betweenindoor and outdoor architecture.

The Capri Palace Hotel has a parkthat was rich with foliage andvegetation, with all kinds ofbotanical species, and eachrequires a different type of lighting. We started with general andaccent lighting that was placedat the base of the larger foliage. Linealuce gave us wall-washereffects on the walls, and wepositioned Light Up at the baseof special plants.
To complete the big picture,Woody and Miniwoody, with their multitude of optics, were installed. These fittings are excellent interms of performance; theyensure precision aiming andthey are adjustable so that hey can light all kinds of details. This way everything can beaccented, from thin branchesto large palm trees.

Catania - Italy: the Aragonesi Park Hotel
Urban Landscape is a servicethe city offers to its community:a way to spend one’s free time,a meeting area, a play area,or a space to run and exercise. The functionality of city parkscan at times be compromised bydarkness, which can change thedaytime happy nature of thesegreen areas into threatening andunsafe places at night.
If parks and public gardens, walkways, bicycle paths, playareas, and other such areas aren’twell-lit, they risk being drasticallydifferent at night. These outdoor spaces couldbecome unliveable and evendangerous places after sunset. Therefore, lighting is nownot only a thing of beauty, but also necessary for our safetyand those around us; outdoorspaces can be recuperated withlighting, making them liveableand safe during the night hours.

The Plac Lotrikow Gardenis a winding network of pavedpedestrian trails and inter-reflective pole top lanterns. This lighting is for pedestrian safetyand is anti-glare for visual comfort. The columns are grouped togetherwith spotlights and light fittingsfor the walkways, bringing outall of the beautiful elementsin this urban landscape. The external trails needed objectsthat blend in with nature. Therefore, fittings such as the Teewere used, which blends in wellwith its surroundings and with thepassageways that wind throughrocks and vegetation.
These light fittings give off a softlight, ideal for enhancing thevarious rock formations and all thedifferent levels in the landscape. These fittings have achameleon-like glass capand blend in perfectly withthis context. Miniwoody withspikes was also utilised when weneeded a fitting that could beinstalled in the rocky terrain. This created not only a pathwaybut a play with light and darknessthat enhances the naturalbeauty of the rocks.
urban landscape
Along the pathways, Sparkoffered us a directional lighting.Spark fittings work well withMiniwoody spikes, which havespot optics in order to bring outspecial trees or shrubs. We installed a series of Light Upwith articulated joints and adjustablearms to complete the big pictureand to add a touch of magic. The wonderfully organic nature ofthese fixtures makes them looklike they are growing right up outof the ground, looking like a plantthat can emit light.

Spill-Ring Protective glass Baffle grid
Parks and gardens are the future. These urban areas are where werelax and take refuge; they arelocations of reassurance andbeauty. They represent points ofreference in our cities and havebecome part of the identityof the city, and a way forit to show off its culture. The Singapore Botanical Gardensare an example. The Gardens were designed incollaboration with Louis Clair.
A tropical garden lighting projectmust consider difficult climacticconditions, cultural norms, and,of course, local traditions. In this instance, we used Light Upwith a visor. The fitting is hiddenblends in with plants and sandysurfaces and grass. By hiding thelight’s point of emission, the lightfixture creates effects that aremagical yet remain natural. The glass, which is secured to thebody of the fitting, is slightly tiltedto allow water to drain out when itrains or when the fitting is washed.
With the other fittings that wereutilized, like MiniWoody,we paid special attentionto the quality of design and themanagement of light flow. The protective glass ensures thatdust and dirt do not accumulateon the glass surface. The honeycomb grill gives anexcellent control of the light flow, limiting light dispersion.

iGuzzini - The History
and Company Philosophy
A series of projects exemplify possiblesolutions already undertaken in privateresidential gardens and recreationalgreen areas in relation to green urbanareas, providing direct evidenceof some very successful projects.

iGuzzini - The History
and Company Philosophy
