Parental Involvement in Schools
Education research supports the general idea that students do better in school when parents are
involved in their education.
Parental Involvement in Schools
According to Harris and Robinson (2016), it is important for parents to convey the importance of education
to their children and maintain an environment in which learning can
flourish.
Parental Involvement in Schools
We seek your guidance and support in your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience.
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers.
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and toimprove literacy skills
Parental Involvement in Schools
We seek your guidance and support in your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life.
5) Informs you and/or the teacher if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
Parental Involvement in Schools
It is important to teach our students to take responsibility for their own belongings. We can do this by:• inculcating the habit of checking for the items they need
to bring • refraining from delivering items unless they are critical
ones, such as wallets, bus pass, medicine, spectacles or house keys.
• encouraging them to think on their feet and find their own solutions on those occasions when they have forgotten to bring an item to school.
Parents’ Engagement3 things families should know about their
child’s school and school work:
they are an integral part of their child’s development
they have knowledge about their children that we need
Parents’ Engagement3 things families should know about their
child’s school and school work:
they should not be afraid to reach out to their children’s
teacher and the school
Parents’ Support
Time Management
Help your child draw up a time-table for his week’s work.
Weekend night is ideal for them to sit down and plan for the following week.
Allow time for each subject, giving more time to their weaker subjects.
Be realistic; know how much they can do.
It is important to give time for relaxation and exercise.
Parents’ Support
Parents can support your child by helping them to develop good study habits.
To study effectively means to put in less time and get better results.
Parents can support your child by listening to them and pay more attention to their emotional needs.
Admission into Secondary 1
2 ways of seeking admission into Sec 1:
a) Sec 1 Posting Exercise (refer to 2018 Secondary 1 Information Booklet and Secondary Education Booklet)
b) Direct School Admission (DSA) Exercise
Direct School Admission (DSA)
• Introduced in 2005, the DSA scheme isMOE’s commitment to holistic education.
• DSA schools have the autonomy to admitstudents using criteria other than PSLEresults but keeping to principles oftransparency and meritocracy. This allowsfor a more diverse range of studentachievements and talents to be recognised.
Direct School Admission (DSA)
• Obtain more information on DSA admission by checking the schools’ websites. Application deadline for each DSA school may differ. For more informationhttp://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/dsa-sec/
To prepare for DSA
Keep a portfolio of your child’s achievements, both academic and non-academic
Submit this to your child’s form teacher at P6 before the June holidays for the teacher to prepare his/her testimonial
Visit the website of the school of their choice

What is T-Score?• It gives the relative position of a
pupil’s performance compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject
• The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject (not how good he is as compared to others)
How is T-Score calculated for each subject?
where X: pupil’s mark for the subjectY: average mark (mean) scored by all
pupilsZ: spread of marks around the average
mark (standard deviation)
ZY)-(X1050T +=
How is the AggregateScore calculated?
By adding the T-Scores ofthe 4 subjects
Example:
Subject Total Mark T-ScoreEL 200 105 34CL 200 152 51
Maths 100 67 53Science 100 58 47
Aggregate Score: 185
PSLE Aggregate Score
- Sum of the T-Scores of a student in all 4 subjects
- Transformed-Score of each subject for a student is obtained by a mathematical formula to normalise (or standardise) the raw score of that subject of the student.
- The sole purpose is to convert each of the raw scores of the 4 subjects to a common ‘currency’ before adding them up to obtain the aggregate T-Score.
