BALTIMORE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS are a quirky lot. Some, like the elaborately detailed Christmas traingardens that grace basements, malls and fire depart-ments each December, are ubiquitous. Others, likethe gazillion lights bedecking the row homes onHampden’s 34th Street, are crazily elaborate. Andthen there are the traditions defying categorization.
Kicking off the season by lighting, not aChristmas tree, but a downtown monumentdedicated to GeorgeWashington? The annualall-tuba Christmas carol concert at the InnerHarbor? Serving sauerkraut alongside roastedturkey? You get the picture.
In 2004, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra rolledout Holiday Spectacular, a music and dance-filledextravaganza celebrating the delights of the season,Baltimore style. Santa doesn’t just whoosh down thechimney, he kicks in a chorus line. The reindeer pullingthe man-in-red’s sleigh aren’t penned up on stage, theydash through the audience. In just six years, the showhas become as much a part of Baltimore in Decemberas lighted boat parades and New Year’s Eve fireworks.“It’s already a tradition,” says BSO piccolo playerLaurie Sokoloff, who has played in the show every year.“Everybody who comes just loves it and talks aboutlooking forward to coming back again.”

To mark the BSO Holiday Spectacular’s sixth anniversary, here are a half-dozen reasons why the show is a Baltimoreholiday tradition that’s here to stay.
Whether it’s decorating the tree or baking cookies, the bestholiday traditions are the ones that get everyone involved. That’swhy every year for Christmas, Claire Holmes and Aline Haubergive their parents, Ed and Stella Holmes, tickets to a Saturdaymatinee of Holiday Spectacular. It’s an homage to the trips to thesymphony and the theater they experienced as children. It’s alsothe gift of family. Dressed in their Sunday finery, the collectionof 12 grandparents, parents, cousins, aunts and uncles ranging inage from 8 to 71, sits in two short rows at the Meyerhoff. Nanaalways sits in the middle of the children, smiling from ear to ear.“The Holiday Spectacular has always been a multigenerationaltradition for us,” explains Claire Holmes, who lives in Towson.“It’s nice to put everything else aside and have time in themiddle of a Saturday afternoon, when the rest of the world isrunning around crazy, to be together and enjoy the sameholiday concert experience.”
Familiar holiday music? Check. Lavish costumes? Check.Songs and banter from past hosts like Sandy Patty,Ann HamptonCallaway and this year’s host, Broadway actress and singerMaureen McGovern? Check. All of these are important tothe Holiday Spectacular, but perhaps the show’s most criticalcomponent is its fun factor. There’s a spirit to the productionthat cannot be denied. And it’s so infectious it’s spilling out intothe community as BSO musicians and tap-dancing Santas fromthe Spectacular are joining in such long-standing city traditionsas theWashington Monument lighting in MountVernon andSanta Claus’ arrival at the Inner Harbor.“Baltimoreans love aparty,” says Michael Evitts, communications director for
Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, a nonprofit that promotesthe city.“And it’s even more of a party when you can celebratein the community with your friends and neighbors.”
Traditions like Hampden’s Miracle on 34th Street may occurevery year, but the reason people return time and again is to seewhat sort of new light displays residents create. The same is truewith the Holiday Spectacular. This year’s new additions includeLiberace impersonator Martin Preston and a glitzy productionnumber celebrating the holidays LasVegas-style. Unwilling tospoil any surprises, BSO operations manager Alicia Lin is mum onthe details.“There will be showgirls,” she confirms. In addition, dog trainer Tony Hoard brings his crew of talented AustralianShepherds to the Meyerhoff this year. The dogs, which have beenfeatured on “America’s Got Talent” and “Good MorningAmerica,” will perform with the BSO.“This is a first,” Lin says.“We’ve never had a four-footed star in the holiday show before.”
The holidays are also about anticipating certain events that don’tchange, like the Holiday Festival of Trains at the B&O RailroadMuseum. That’s why there are two acts in the show, Santa Tap andthe dramatization of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” thatremain constant, no matter what.“Holiday traditions are fun, familiar and something you look forward to,” Lin says.“That’show it is with Santa Tap and ‘Twas. I can’t imagine the showwithout either one.”
Reason 1: It’s for everyone.
Reason 2: It’s fun.
Reason 3: It’s dynamic.
From left: BSO violins perform holiday favorites; Mount Vernon’s Washington Monumentis turned on; Tony Hoard and Rockin’ Rory perform with the Tap Dancing Santas; Santagreets the audience in “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”; Martin Preston impersonatesLiberace; 34th Street in Hampden lights up the night; Santa lectures his elves; giantnutcrackers grace the Meyerhoff stage.
Reason 4: And yet, it’s familiar.

8 Overture
The word tradition means something that’sbeen handed down. However, many of thetraditions we associate with the holiday, such as Santa Claus’ red suit, were actuallyinvented not too long ago, according toJoseph J.Walsh, a history and classics profes-sor at Loyola University Maryland and theauthor ofWereTheyWise Men or Kings:TheBook of Christmas Questions.“Our feelings, not time or history, determine what weconsider traditions,” he says.“Somethingsatisfies a nostalgic hunger and evokes aparticular feeling of authenticity, and so wecome to regard it as a tradition.” CourtneySpears, a junior at Baltimore School forthe Arts, was only a few days into herfreshman year when she learned from class-mates about the tradition of BSA dancersparticipating in the Holiday Spectacular. Sheauditioned and appeared in the 2009 showas one of 20 tap-dancing, high-kickingSantas. Perfecting the routine while wearingthe Santa costume was no easy feat, butit’s an experience Spears treasures.“It wasexhilarating,” the 16-year-old says ofperforming onstage at the Meyerhoff.“I’m hoping to do it again this year.”
Longtime Baltimore Sun reporter JacquesKelly starts getting ready for the holidays asearly as July. There’s his traditional Christmasgarden of trains and scenes to plan andbuild, fruitcake to bake and age, sauerkrautto make.“Traditions have to have a lot ofwarmth and a lot of thought,” the Baltimorenative says.“They have to make otherpeople feel good and they have to makeyou feel good. All that takes time.” TheHoliday Spectacular, which involves morethan 100 musicians, dancers and singers, isa major effort that also requires months ofplanning. In fact, BSO administrators startmeeting to map out the next year’s showbefore the run of this year’s show is evencomplete. Why do they do it? “Just beingable to provide an experience to our audi-ence that’s become a tradition in Baltimore, that’s important to us and it’s important tothe orchestra,” Lin says. Sokoloff agrees.“I can’t ever remember doing one of theseshows without seeing a standing ovation ora long ovation at the end,” she says.“Ouraudience makes it obvious to us that theyare having a wonderful time.”
Reason 5: It’s nostalgic.
Reason 6: It’s over the top.

16 Overture
Hailed as one of the world’s leading
conductors for her artistic vision and
commitment to accessibility in classical
music, Marin Alsop made history with
her appointment as the 12th music
director of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra. With her inaugural con-
certs in September 2007, she became
the first woman to head a major
American orchestra. She also holds
the title of conductor emeritus at the
Bournemouth Symphony in the United
Kingdom, where she served as the
principal conductor from 2002
to 2008, and is music director of the
Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary
Music in California.
In 2005, Ms. Alsop was named a
MacArthur Fellow, the first conductor
ever to receive this prestigious award.
In 2007, she was honored with a
European Women of Achievement
Award; in 2008, she was inducted as a
fellow into the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences; and in 2009, MusicalAmerica named her “Conductor
of the Year.”
A regular guest conductor
with the New York Philharmonic,
The Philadelphia Orchestra, London
Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles
Philharmonic, Ms. Alsop also appears
frequently as a guest conductor with
some of the most distinguished
orchestras around the world. In addi-
tion to her performance activities, she
is also an active recording artist with
award-winning cycles of Brahms,
Barber and Dvorák orchestral works.
Ms. Alsop attended Yale University
and received her master’s degree
from The Juilliard School. In 1989, her
conducting career was launched when
she won the Koussevitzky Conducting
Prize at Tanglewood, where she
studied with Leonard Bernstein.

In 1986, the Board of Directors of the Baltimore SymphonyOrchestra established The Legato Circle in recognition of thoseindividuals who have notified the BSO of a planned gift, includinggifts through estate plans or life-income arrangements.
Bequests and planned gifts are the greatest source of securityfor the BSO’s future. The Symphony depends on lasting gifts suchas these to help fund our diverse musical programs and activities.Members of The Legato Circle play a vital and permanent role inthe Symphony’s future.
If you have named the BSO in your estate plans, please contactJoanne Rosenthal at 410-783-8010 or jrosenthal@bsomusic.orgto join the Legato Circle.
We gratefully acknowledge the following Donors who haveincluded the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in their Estate Plans.
22 Overture
HOURS AFTER PERFORMING in the final concert of this year’s HolidaySpectacular on Dec. 19, Assistant Principal Trumpet Rene Hernandezwill be off like a flash to embark on his favorite holiday tradition.
No, he won’t be at the mall buying last-minute gifts or deckingthe halls with his wife Silva and their 5-year-old daughter Tehya. In fact,he won’t even be in the country. Instead, Hernandez will be in Milan,Italy, with his wife and daughter visiting his in-laws for the holidays andlearning the finer points of cooking like an Italian. “The main thing I lookforward to is being with family,” says Hernandez, a native of San Diego,Calif., who met his violinist wife more than a decade ago when theyboth played in the Milan Symphony. Silva Boletini-Hernandez is nowa freelance violinist who has played with regional orchestras, includingthose in Delaware and Annapolis, and the BSO.
The trip offers Hernandez a chance to recharge his batteries anddevote some time to his other main passion beside music: food. Over
the last few years, the accomplished home cook has picked up pointerson making such authentic dishes as Pasta alla Bottarga (Pasta with dried, cured fish roe) and Cotoletta alla Milanese (“sort of like Italian WienerSchnitzel,” he explains.) The biggest lesson he’s learned? “The food issimple. It’s all about having the best ingredients.”
It’s also all about the way that food brings family and friendstogether. Hernandez recalls spending New Year’s Eve with his family ata friend’s apartment in Milan last year and sharing a dish of seafoodpasta. After dinner they went out on the balcony to admire the Duomodi Milano, the city’s architectural masterpiece, glowing brightly againstthe evening sky.
At midnight they stood in the cold night air and toasted the NewYear with champagne. There was no place he would rather be, he says.
“It was perfect.”—Maria Blackburn
