Outer Banks Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Coalition

Mission Statement

“To help facilitate the education and awareness of practical bicycle and

pedestrian safety to drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and all those who live or visit the

Outer Banks of North Carolina in a positive and proactive manner.”

Foundation of the Coalition

This group came about after several accidents across the Outer Banks this past year. Members of Kitty Hawk Kites staff and Max Radio of the Carolina’s began a campaign last summer in an effort to spread awareness for pedestrian and bicycle safety across Dare and Currituck County. Since the launch of this campaign, many other businesses and citizens have spoken out for these efforts.

Story Continued…

The coalition was founded in January 2013 and is lead by Dare County Commissioner, Max Dutton.

Since then, the coalition has forged strong relationships with NC Department of Transportation in an effort to provide brochures, stickers and other resources to the Outer Banks.

Major employers such as Food Lion are also among the membership along with several town officials from Corolla to Hatteras in hopes of garnering participation from all regions of the Outer Banks.

The Outer Banks Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Coalition has also worked closely with Dare County in creating a training and awareness video that will air on Channel 20, YouTube and will be used in many employee packets that will be distributed later this spring to businesses interested in providing safety materials to their students and employees.

Plans are also taking place for several community events through out the year with local schools and organizations – more details will be posted on the coalitions Facebook Page and Twitter Account in coming days. Max Radio of the Carolina’s are also running radio spots on air as public service announcements.
