CastlesCastles

• Kefalonia has two castles. One at Assos and one at Peratata village, Saint George’s.

• St. George’s castle was originally built in the 12th century by the Byzantines but it was mostly the Venetians that determined its current shape. They built the external walls in 1504. Also, it used to be the island’s capital until 1757, when the capital was moved to Argostoli.

• Assos castle was built in the 16th century by the Venetians in order to protect the village from pirate attacks. The castle was used until 1956 as a prison for political prisoners, who lived there and cultivated vineyards.

• Argostoli has been the capital of Kefalonia since 1757 and has approx. 12,000 inhabitants.

• The modern and cosmopolitan Argostoli provides many interesting features and activities!

• The Archaeological and the Korgialenios History and Folklore museums are to be found there and are worth a visit.

• Our town has one of the richest and oldest libraries in Greece, Korgialenios.

• The De Bosset bridge in Argostoli is the longest (more than 700 m) stone bridge in Europe. It was built in 1813 by Charles-Phillip De Bosset, a Swiss civil engineer, officer of the British army and Military Governor of Kefalonia.

• Argostoli is home to one of the greatest and unique geological phenomena, Katavothres!

03/05/23 13

KatavothresKatavothres • The sea water flows inland and enters sinkholes on the earth that are below sea level. It is assumed that there are caverns below the seabed which is where the water flows in.

• In 1963, Austrian geomorphologists added some purple dye to the water and followed its course only to make some surprising discoveries!

03/05/23 14

Lake-cave MelissaniLake-cave Melissani• Water travelled in

underground rivers then mixed with rainwater and finally reached the Melissani lake-cave almost 15 kilometers away in its semi-salted form.

• From there the water flowed into the sea at the village of Karavomilos (Sami bay, eastern Kefalonia).

• All in all it had taken the purple water 2 weeks to make this trip across the island!
