Framework #5

Describe the way multi-cellular organisms go from cells to tissues to organs to organ systems to organisms.

Organization Cells, which are the basic unit of structure and function in a living thing

make tissues

Tissues, which are a group of similar cells that work together to perform a

specific function, make organs.

Organs are a structure in the body that is composed of different kinds of tissues.

Organs make organs systems, which are a group of organs that work together to perform a major function in body. (ex. Heart, stomach etc.)

Organ system makes organisms, which are living things.

Example

Cells make up cardiac muscle (tissues)

Cardiac muscle tissues make up heart (organ)

Heart plays a major role in circulatory system. (organ system)

Circulatory system plays a major role

in body. (organism)

Cells

• A cell is a basic unit of measure in a living thing.

• An example of a cell would be a brain cell

• Brain cells have a specialized function which is to send impulses to nerve cells to make things move them.

Tissue

• A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function

• Brain tissue has the specialized function to control movement in the body.

Organ

• An organ is a structure in the body that is composed of different kinds of tissues.

• Some examples of an organ are brains and spinal cords.

Organ System

• Organ systems are a group of organs that work together to perform a major function in body.

• The nervous system is made up of brain tissue, the entire brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves in all your skin

Organism

• An organism is a living thing.

• Humans are organisms and they have a nervous system which is very complex compared to other animals.

Activities You Can Do• To learn more about cells ask your mom or teacher to take you to the Museum of Science and look at the

Cells exhibit.• Take the organization of life and put it into something you know. • Make a poster that illustrates the order among cells, tissues, organs, organ systems and organisms.

Think about these key questions:

1. What are the levels of organization in order?

2. How can the failure of one part of the system affect the whole body?
