Health Promoting Hospitals – Brief Intervention Training
AIMED AT This session is aimed at all healthcare professionals. AIM
How do you make patients more aware of the help that is available in supporting them to make healthy lifestyle choices?
Do your feelings about your lifestyle as well as the patient‟s lifestyle, create barriers that prevent you from giving advice?
Do you know enough about today‟s health issues to give you confidence in offering help, advice to patients and either signpost or offer a referral?
Do you know how to properly record such interventions?
Smoking kills about 80,000 every year. It is also a major cause of illness and disability. Many of the patients who attend hospital are smokers and many of them are suffering ill health as a direct result of smoking.
Alcohol currently kills about 9000 people a year and is one of the fastest growing causes of avoidable ill-health and hospital admissions.
Poor diet and low physical activity play a major part in increasing the likelihood of many health problems, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.
Mental health, sexual health and falls can also have impacts on overall health.
All healthcare professionals have a part to play in making sure that people are aware of the benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle and that people who want to make changes are made aware of what help is available to support them.
We offer a free one day course designed to equip all healthcare professionals with the understanding, confidence, skills and knowledge to identify patients who may benefit from lifestyle changes and to raise awareness of the support and further advice to which they can be signposted or referred to.
