Boiling Points

• Solubility: a solute’s ability to dissolve in a polar solvent (water)– the more polar a substance is, the more

soluble it is– solubility decreases as chain length

increases– smaller alcohols, aldehydes, ketones &

carboxylic acids are typically soluble
