Who are we?
We are a decile 2 school in the Otorohanga township. Our roll is made up of 65% NZ Maori, 30% NZ European and 5% Indian. We have 3 classes, all with IWBs and at least 5 computers for student use. We have been involved in the King Country Coast ICTPD cluster since 2010. Our Year 6-8 class became a 1:1 laptop class in 2012.Many of our families do not have access to the internet at home.
GOAL 3:• Teachers to
integrate e-learning effectively into their practice creating an innovative and exciting learning environment for all students
What have we changed?• Set up class wikis and blogs• Trialled programmes (e.g.
Mathletics, Reading Eggs etc.)
• Made use of online resources (e.g. LEARNZ, Science Learning Hub)
• Reviewed – decided on what works for our students and ran with it (e.g the Daily 5).

GOAL 3:• Teachers to
integrate e-learning effectively into their practice creating an innovative and exciting learning environment for all students
Daily 5 in action – students can also choose where to work as well as what to do while teacher takes small groups.
Why did this need changing?• Our student data was not improving
even though teachers had been involved in good PD. We were looking at a complete change of thinking and moving away from teachers being “in control” to “empowering” our students to “take control of their own learning”.
• We also wanted students to apply strategies they have learnt in one curriculum area to another.
• Our Teacher Action Inquiry for 2012 is: “How can we improve learners ability to read for understanding across the curriculum?”
GOAL 3:• Teachers to
integrate e-learning effectively into their practice creating an innovative and exciting learning environment for all students
What did it achieve?• Accelerated learning with
many students making 1½ – 2½ years progress in reading over 3 terms.
• More importantly it “empowered” students.
• Other teachers saw the value in the change and are in the process of changing their practice.
GOAL 3:• Teachers to
integrate e-learning effectively into their practice creating an innovative and exciting learning environment for all students
How do you know?• OTJ – observation,
discussion, work, testing etc.
• Student voice – Daily 5• Student voice –
Favourite Activity• CRT observations by other
teachers
GOAL 3:• Teachers to
integrate e-learning effectively into their practice creating an innovative and exciting learning environment for all students
What advice would you give others trying to do this?
• Just do it!• Collegiality and
collaboration are important but sometimes you just have to say this is what is happening.
• Don’t accept excuses.• If it is worth doing, they will
see that.
