DEFINITION• It is a facility within the hospital where surgical

operations are carried out in a sterile environment

OLD OPERATION THEATRE

SURGEON & ASSISTANT EQUIPMENT

• Apron-protects from blood stains

• Caps-protective cap covering hair

• Shoes, shoe covers

• Surgical gloves-prevents contamination between doctor & patients

• Masks-Present over their lower face covering mouth &noses

• Glasses-over their eyes

• Operating lights are kept over the table to provide bright light without shadow during surgery

• Continuously measures certain parameters• Example-glucose monitoring with glucometre

• To have continuous ECG

PULSE OXIMETRY

• Involves measurement of the saturated percentage of oxygen in blood

ANAESTHESIA MACHINE

• Assists patients breathing during surgery

What is wrong with our practices

• Disinfectants used indiscriminately,• Used unnecessarily• Concentration not adequate• Economic consideration

STERILIZATION

• Sterilization is absolute, removes microbes and spores too.

• To achieve sterilization is expensive, not sustainable, many times not needed.

• An effective sterilization reduces the infections drastically.

BASIC CARE OF OT

• Keep the floor clean and dry-bacteria are reduced• Keep the mops dry when not in use• Don’t use chemicals, use only when contaminated with blood &body fluids

HANDLING OF AIR IN OT

• Negative air pressure is vented to the operation theatre• Environmental cleaning should be twice daily
