LESSON #1: SYNCHRONOUS / ASYNCHRONOUS TIME

•2001 – 3 continents – STUDIO class

Different schedules / time framesDifferent time zonesDifferent academic cultures

LESSON #2: SEMINAR class: •Students performed MUCH better when asked blog instead of write papers during research / •Communicated MUCH better with Professor over e-mail and skype then in person

LESSON #3: LARGE LECTURE class

Large lecture classes are better conducted as an online delivery with sections in physical space

This solves a lot of problems with space…

LOST IN TRANSLATION?

Suggestion: students volunteer to translate and work with peers in their native country

Korean students in Interface class consider cultural exchange (not only language)

BLACK BOARD PROS & CONS

Easy to use Instructors and Students familiar with structure – Based on established teaching models that work: calendar / syllabus / assignments / midterm / final /…

Not dynamic Instructors and Students have little direct communication Lack of sense of community / participation One size (does not) fit all

CONCLUSION

1. THIS IS A JOB FOR A DEDICATED TEAM OF PEOPLE:• BUSINESS / ADMINISTRATOR(S)• CURRICULUM ADMINISTRATOR(S)• INTERFACE DESIGNER(S)• TECHNOLOGIST / PROGRAMMER(S)

2. DEFINE CLEARLY THE VISION, THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD COMMIT TO MAKING THIS HAPPEN AND THEN LOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO SHARES THIS VISION AND WILL LEAD AND OVERSEE THE ABOVE.

CONCLUSION 2

3. THIS MAY HAVE TO BE 2 POSITIONS

4. OPPORTUNITY TO LEVERAGE THIS HIRE/PROJECT INTO A LARGE FUNDING STREAM—THERE IS ARGUABLY MORE MONEY AVAILABLE FOR EDUCATION INNOVATION THAT ANY OTHER TECHNOLOGY ARENA.

5. SEEK A NEW APPROACH, AVOID HAVING IT on one side, experimenters on the other.
