A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
“Looking…Back…Around…Ahead”
Beginning a New Year provides a unique opportunity for each of us. It is a time to stop and take a breath and ‘Look’ at where we are before we jump back into the race. To do this we naturally ‘look back’ to see from where we have come, we ‘look around’ to see where we are, and then ‘look ahead’ to the horizon and wonder what lies beyond.
LOOKING BACK… As a church the past year has been a time of change and celebration. You have a new pastor. You have additions to the staff; a new janitor and recently have added an Intern from UNI. You have Sunday School back on Sunday mornings for adults and children. You celebrated a Confirmation Class of 7 outstanding youth. You celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Geneseo UMC. You may feel a little tired as you look over all you have been through this year. But such is the life of the church.
LOOKING AROUND… It is often a temptation to live either in the future or the past. Anticipating (or worrying about) something new happening or finding comfort in the way things used to be. It is sometimes difficult for us to ‘seize the day’ . But yet, each morning we are giving a new gift to do just that. Find peace and trust in the fact that God has each day planned for you. Take in a deep breath, enjoy this day, and don’t let the burdens of the future or memories of the past take away the blessing of this moment.
LOOKING AHEAD… A new year is like having a blank sheet of paper. We don’t even know what will happen in the next few seconds.
What we do know is that each of us have goals, hopes, and aspirations for this new year. Whether they are your personal, career, or spiritual goals, they set the direction for your journey through 2018.
In our personal life, we may find it is time to work on that relationship that has been a little frayed or uncomfortable. Maybe take a look at our career. Are we where we want to be? Are we making the best of our current situation? If not, what changes would help us to either bloom where we are planted or to move on. Our spiritual life, like everything else, is a journey not a destination. So, we can embrace change in our understanding of our faith, as we deepen our relationship with God through God’s Word for us.
Looking ahead with anticipation depends on who we trust. Do we trust our worst fears, or do we trust the promises of God? How we fill in the blank sheet of paper that is 2018 will come to life based on who and where we place our trust. I leave you with these words of Jesus spoken in Matthew 6:31-34…
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Blessings Pastor Harry
