OHIO MANUFACTURING COUNTS
FACTS ABOUT OHIO MANUFACTURING
Ohio is powered by manufacturing. Ohio manufacturing is responsible for almost 17% of Ohio’s Gross Domestic Product and contributes to the quality of life in Ohio by providing:
• More than 600,000 jobs for Ohio workers
• An annual payroll of more than $33 billion, the highest total annual wages of any non-government economic sector
• More than $46 billion in products to more than 216 countries and territories
• A safer environment through decreased emission and increased recycling
Manufacturing is the largest of the 20 sectors of Ohio’s economy with 16.7% of total output in 2010; durable goods were 9.8 percent and non-durable goods were 6.9 percent of output.
Ohio’s manufacturing sector produced $80.0 billion worth of goods in 2010, ranking it fifth in the nation after California, Texas, Illinois and North Carolina.
The average annual earnings of Ohio workers on manufacturing payrolls in 2010 were $53,281.
The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association has prepared this report to provide Ohioans with an understanding of the importance of manufacturing to the economic future of the state. The data in this publication were the most current available as of publishing in May 2012.

FACT: Industry leads the way in solid waste reduction and recycling.
Reduction and recycling include source reduction activities, reuse,
recycling, composting and incineration. Industry is an enormous
consumer of recycled materials, such as metals, glass, paper and
plastics; thus manufacturers are strong advocates for improving
recycling systems in Ohio and the U.S.
Note: Ohio EPA attributes some year-to-year variations to changes in economic activity/output: “Ohio’s industrial reduction/recycling rates tend to rise and fall in direct correlation with Ohio’s economic output. Ohio EPA would expect industrial recycling to correspond to manufacturing activity. Thus, all else being equal, the greater manufacturing output, the more recycling and vice versa.”

FACT: Ohio manufacturers have made tremendous progress in reducing
toxic releases to the environment, year-after-year-after-year.
Note: U.S. EPS requires an annual Toxic Release Inventory from facilities. Chemicals in the annual inventory are added or delisted in any year. Thus, base year core chemical amounts vary.

U.S. MANUFACTURINGThe North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. Source: Manufacturing & Distribution USA, Sixth Edition, Industry Analyses, Statistics, and Leading Companies © 2011
FACT: Ohio is first, second or third among states in 81 NAICS categories of manufacturing.
FACT: The leading Ohio industries in terms of dollars of product shipped are: iron and steel mills and
ferroalloy manufacturing ($14,557 million); petroleum refineries ($12,532 million); aircraft engine
and engine parts manufacturing ($8,818 million); plastics products manufacturing (nec) ($7,977
million); soap and cleaning compound manufacturing ($6,802 million); and motor vehicle metal
stamping ($6,488 million).
FACT: Ohio ships more than 20% of all U.S. production in these nine product categories: 1) rubber
product manufacturing (nec), 2) structural clay product manufacturing (nec), 3) pressed and blown
glass and glassware manufacturing (nec), 4) iron and steel pipe and tube manufacturing, 5)
custom (metal) roll forming, 6) machine tool (metal forming types) manufacturing, 7) rolling mill
machinery and equipment manufacturing, 8) motor vehicle metal stamping, and 9) aircraft
engine and engine parts manufacturing
Notes: nec stands for not elsewhere classified.
An asterisk (*) means that shipment data are incomplete due to data being withheld to prevent disclosure of competitive information in one or more of the industries which comprise the NAICS category. Data may not show all states active in the NAICS category. All data available at the time of publication are shown.
