Th e Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a nonprofi t education and research institute and has long been recognized as one of America’s most respected and widely quoted sources of objective information on real estate development, land use planning and policy.

SynopsisIn 1998, The Urban Land Institute (ULI), recognizing Hickok as a leader in the profession, invited him to co-author their new Office Development Handbook.

Mr. Hickok codified the concepts and ideas about office building design he had first articulated in the early 1990’s and presented at World Workplace in 1997. These concepts, including larger floor plates, column free space, higher ceilings and increased daylight, supported a shift from a hierarchical, private office environment toward a more horizontal, open office work place.

In his section, Project Planning and Design, Hickok defines best practices for all aspects of the planning and design of office developments including chapters on:

“Th is comprehensive overview set the national standard for the design of the total workplace environment. Th e Offi ce Development Handbook is a primary resource for real estate professionals, design and planning professionals and is used as textbook for many colleges and universities.” —Pat Patrick, Chief Executive Offi cer, Urban Land Institute

Mr. Hickok’s book has been incorporated into university real estate and design curriculum nationwide, including: ▪ The Center for the Built Environment (CBE) and the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban
