About Us
Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) is an annual inter-varsity
competition organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers in which undergraduate
students design, build and test Formula-style (open-wheeled and open cockpit) race
cars and compete with the best universities from around the world.
Every year, NUS FSAE (started in 2001) has an average of 16 undergraduates
involved in the project. These students design, fabricate, assemble and test a new
race car over a period of 11 months. In May every year, they have the opportunity to
fly to Michigan, USA for the annual FSAE competition.
This competition attracts more than a hundred universities from all over the world,
each showcasing a new car built by their own FSAE team. Often regarded as the
toughest inter-varsity competition, the team not only have to go through dynamic
events such as acceleration and endurance, the students will also pit their skills in
static events such as Engineering design presentation, cost evaluation and marketing
strategies.
The most rewarding part of the NUS FSAE race car project is providing its students
with a wealth of engineering knowledge and experience as well as practical hands-on
skills to prepare them for working life in a similar industry. On top of that, the students
are also involved in project and finance management as well as cost-saving, further
preparing them for a real-life engineering career.
Students also learn to manage and balance time between the project, studies, and
their loved ones. More importantly, they learn the importance of teamwork and the
impact of schedules in their unified quest for excellence in the realms of automotive
engineering.
Presently, the NUS FSAE project has evolved into an important educational
component of the NUS Engineering Programme. It now comes under the umbrella of
the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) which is overseen by the
Faculty of Engineering. Below are some photos of the car and the team during the
2018 Formula SAE competition in Michigan, USA.
