Winter has finally arrived as I look out on a frosty 8 degree January morning, but the days are finally growing longer. By the time this reaches your hands, we will be moving on toward spring and into the presidential primaries, which will determine our next Commander in Chief to lead this nation. As a president of a different sort—president of your
NCVMA—I reflect on what this organization does for us veterinarians as a profession and for us individually. How has it grown and changed in recent years, in response to our dynamic profession? Your NCVMA has expanded its benefits and services to help its members
We continue to provide excellent continuing education opportunities, in large venues for extended conferences, as well as in small regional gatherings in each district. I find the regional meetings extremely valuable, not only for the CE, but also for a chance to get to know and converse with our area colleagues. Developing a rapport with them helps me keep a pulse on what is occurring in my local area with regard to veterinary medicine on the business and medical aspects. And knowing your colleagues by name, face, and personality helps to foster a respect and collegiality that benefits us all.
We are the only state VMA with a mobile app that keeps you up to date on your local district meetings and statewide NCVMA conferences. The app also enables you to access every NCVMA member and NCVMA staff, either via e‐mail, text or phone with a touch of your finger. NOTE: ONLY NCVMA members may access this info, not the public or non‐members. The live Twitter feed (with 3200 followers nationwide!) featured on the app scrolls all sorts of animal healthcare tips, updates and fun facts. Links connect you with the NC Veterinary Medical Board, the NCVMA, the AVMA, DEA, AAHA and more.
NCVMA keeps its finger on the pulse of what is going on that affects us in the legislature and in the state. NCVMA Political Action Committee money is vital in making sure that our point of view is heard by our
legislators, and that we are kept abreast of what is going on in the capital halls that may affect us. Remember the bullet that we dodged last fall regarding a sales tax on veterinary services? Yikes! That was a close one!
Regular alerts on important disease outbreaks, pet food recalls, and other veterinary and agricultural bullet points of significance to all or at least a portion of our members. Although I do not practice on horses, I appreciate being alerted to incidences of EEE and where they occurred. Likewise, the steps being taken to handle the possible avian influenza outbreak.
And how many of you saw and heard our profession advocated on the big screens and pre and post game shows at the football and basketball events at many of our larger universities this year? Again, your NCVMA at work keeping the public educated and reminding them of the value that this profession provides them.
NCVMA has done all this in 2015, all while keeping dues at a low $165/year. Only 1 dues increase in the past 18 years, totaling 5 whole dollars! Who else can claim that, yet still expand its services and programs? Please encourage your bosses, crosstown colleagues, your associates, and your other veterinarian friends who have not joined us to do so. We will be that much stronger for their support. ALSO ‐ Please contribute to the NCVMA Political Action Committee. A miniscule percentage (4%) of our members do so, especially compared to other professions, such as physicians, optometrists, and dentists. Don’t rely on others to support the protection you enjoy. More participants=larger presence for a legislated profession such as veterinary medicine. I hope that 2016 unfolds as a good one for you all. And thank you, NCVMA members, for your membership in this organization!
Kristen Hammett, DVM President, NCVMA
NCVMA Expands: How Do We Do What We Do?
Join Your Colleagues in Promoting The Legislative Profile of the NCVMA
The NCVMA’s Political Action Committee (NCVMA‐PAC) works proactively to educate candidates and public officials on public policy matters critical to the veterinary profession. The NCVMA is highly regarded at the State Capital. The NCVMA‐PAC is the tool by which our Association builds its strength in Raleigh and by which the NCVMA will
continue to expand its visibility among elected officials.
The NCVMA‐PAC is independent of any political party or any specific candidate, and the PAC committee approves contributions regardless of that candidate’s or legislator’s party affiliation. The NCVMA‐PAC also has a strong “Veterinarian’s Day”, which allows
members to personally interact with their legislators.
Membership dues are not used to support the NCVMA‐PAC, which is funded solely by member contributions. As you think about the tremendous services that NCVMA‐PAC regularly provides you, we hope that you will contribute.
