ABSTRACT

Historical surface marine windobservations are summarized byI-degree square areas and months todescribe the seasonal distribution ofwind stress over the California Cur­rent. Off the coasts of southernCalifornia and Baja California, analongshore equatorward componentof surface wind stress is presentthroughout the year. The distribu­tions of wind stress north of CapeMendocino are characterized bymarked changes in direction andmagnitude between summer andwinter. The predominant wind stressmaximum shifts northward coher­ently from off Point Conception inMarch to south of Cape Blanco inSeptember, and extends approxi­mately 500 km in the offshore direc­tion and 1,000 km in the alongshoredirection. Maximum values of sur­face wind stress occur during Julynear Cape Mendocino. The windstress curl is positive near the coastand negative in the region offshore.A line of zero wind stress curl paral­lels the coast 200-300 km offshore,except off central Baja California.The patterns of wind stress curl areconsistent with the existence of anequatorward S verdru p trans portoffshore and a poleward transportnear the coast.

ABSTRACT

Hydrographic stud ies to deter­mine the distribution of the waters ofthe major sockeye-salmon-produc­ing river systems in inner BristolBay show the net seaward flow ofriver water is along the northwest(right) side of inner Bristol Bay. Thenet motion of seawater toward thehead of Bristol Bay transports with itthe waters of Ugashik and Egegikrivers, which enter the bay on thesoutheast side. Near Egegik Bay toMiddle Bluff, the mixed sea andriver waters join the seaward flow ofK vichak and Naknek river waters,which enter at the head of BristolBay. Waters of these four rivers,along with the large volume of waterfrom the rivers entering NushagakBay, are eventually transported to,and move seaward on, the northwestside of Bristol Bay. Waters of Nak­nek, Egegik, and Ugashik rivers aresimilar to each other in the coursesfollowed during ebb and flood tides.Flood tide currents, along with thenontidal current, transport waterfrom Egegik and Ugashik riversabove or north of the entrance toEgegik and Ugashik bays.

Publication of "The Biology ofDiatoms" (Botanical Monographs,Volume 13) has been announced by theUniversity of California Press. Au­thored by several practicing biologists,the book reviews aspects of diatombiology and describes results of recentresearch. It was edited by DietrichWerner, Professor at the BotanischesInstitut, Universitat Marburg-L, Ger­many. Chapters discuss diatom growthand culture, ultrastructure of the diatomcell, silicate metabol ism, photosyn­thesis, heterotrophic nutrition,biochemical composition, movements,sexuality, freshwater diatom ecology,ecological considerations of marine lit­toral diatoms, and ecology of marineplanktonic diatoms. Eels, Their Capture,and Uses Outlined

"Eels, A Natural and Unnatural His­tory," by Christopher Moriarty, hasbeen released by Universe Books, 381Park Ave. South, New York, NY10016. The author is assistant inspectorof fisheries for Ireland's Department ofAgriculture and Fisheries and hasstudied and worked with eels since1959.

This book examines eel lore andlegend, basic eel biology and migra­tions, the catching and farming of eels,getting eels to the consumer and eelcooking, and eel classification. Appen­dices describe length distribution ofeels, age distribution, food preferencesand a list of food organisms found in

Mexican EEZ Impact onShrimping; FreshwaterShrimp Diseases Eyed

The expected economic impact of the200-mile extended jurisdiction limit byMexico on the U.S. shrimp fleet isexplored in "Mexico's 200-MileOffshore Fishing Zone: Its EconomicImpact on the U.S. Gulf of MexicoShrimp Fishery" (TAMU-SG-77­210), by Wade L. Griffin and Bruce R.Beattie.

The 35-page Texas A&M Universityreport estimates average annual shrimpcatch and effort expended by the U.S.fleet in Mexican waters. Also,economic effect on the U.S. shrimpfishery due to shifting the effort fromMexican waters to U.S. waters is esti­mated in terms of rent loss to the fisheryand break-even product prices requiredto achieve open-access equilibrium.

"Crawfish and FreshwaterShrimp Diseases" (TAMU-SG-77­605), by S. K. Johnson, is designed asan information source and field guidefor crustacean culturists, commercialfishermen, and others interested inparasites or abnormal conditions offreshwater crustaceans.

Detailed descriptions, photographs.and illustrations of the common para­sites and commensals are given alongwith information on their life cycles andgeneral biological characteristics in the20- page handbook. Several diseases ofunknown cause are also described. Alist giving definitions of terms is in­cluded, as are 18 color photos. 30black-and-white photos, and 10 illus­trations. Joint Soviet-JapanAquaculture SymposiaProceedings Printed

The proceedings of the Second,Third, Fourth, and Fifth Soviet-JapanJoint Symposia on Aquaculture havebeen published as a four-volume set byTokai University, Japan. Each volumecontains the papers presented by Sovietand Japanese scientists at one of theannual meetings as well as informationon the general program each year.Many of the actual texts are in Russianor Japanese and abstracts in Englishonly accompany the Japanese texts. In­formation on the contents of these vol­umes and the previously published pro­ceedings of the First Joint Symposiumcan be obtained from NMFS Statisticsand Market News Offices by sending aself-addressed mailing label and re­questing a copy of IFR 78/36.

The symposia were held alternatelyin the Soviet Union and Japan under thesponsorship of the Russian All-UnionScientific Research Institute ofFisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO)and Japan's Tokai University. The firstsymposium was held in Tokyo andShimizu in December 1972; the secondin Moscow in November 1973; the thirdin Tokyo in November 1974; and thefifth in Tokyo and Sapporo in Sep­tember 1976. The sixth symposiumproceedings, not yet published, washeld in Moscow and Batumi in October1977.
