Background• Annual reports on Nicaragua's fishery production reflect millions of

dollars produced by fishing in Nicaragua's Caribbean.

• However the resource is being depleted , due to overfishing fromindustrial fisheries.

• Lobster at present may be seeing a mirage because of the increasein fishing areas resulting from the recent ruling of the InternationalCourt of The Hague, which allocated more than 90,000 Squaerkilometers (900,000 Ha.) of sea to Nicaragua, at the expense ofColombia. This means an increase in the area of scaling, lobster, queen snail and sea cucumber.

• The fact: For example coastal shrimp fisheries, the volume of fishinghas dropped from 4.7 million pounds of shrimp capture in 2003 to1.9 million pounds in 2014, representing a decline of more than42% of the fishery.

• Again, indigenous peoples are the one whopay the bill.
